I know it's bringing up an old thread, but I tried to add a VGA to my Dreamcast using the Stripboard design and had no luck, built and tested it a couple times. It just happend that I found this thread that said someone tried the mod just wired straight though and guess what worked perfectly for me so I just wanted to let others know, plus I also made a diagram how I wired it. This might be risky I have no idea but works perfectly for me, tested on 3 monitors and 1 TV perfect on all of them. Here is the Diagram DreamVGA.jpg

That's interesting. I completed the original posters mod two days ago and it is working fine, you've got me wondering a little about the purpose of building the little circuit now if it's not needed. I'm sure there must be some benefit to the components being there.. maybe ? :stupid:

Its making sure the signal levels are correct. Without, its likely out of spec and you cant assume the tv/monitor will like it.

Never tried the stripboard design but i can confirm, it works without it. Must be definitely a PAL DC mod.

I did the mod on a PAL dc. The only problem I have, which is shitting me off is that I've wired my dreamcast to run in an arcade machine and when I plug in the 3.5mm jack I wired up like the diagram shows - there's a slight interference that runs across the arcade monitor. It's like fast moving diagonal lines, most people would not notice it - I did though and now because I know it's there it annoys me. The wiring is fairly simple, it goes dreamcast > 12volt arcade sound amp > speakers. Using my jamma boards through this setup produces no interference on video so I'm just putting it down to something I did with the mod ? although I have no idea what I did wrong at this stage. Anything obvious I should check ?

try using a different ground for the audio on the DC side

So can someone maybe the OP confirm that the circuit is needed for the USA Dreamcasts or is it only for PAL?

It's a very bad idea to skip the stripboard circuit. The circuit uses pull-up resistors and capacitors to act as a sort of buffer.

I annoyed myself with this mod last night. Got it all wired up, nicely routed ribbon cable, tidily mounted ports - then realized I'm out of 150R resistors.

I'm a very impatient person, the next couple of days waiting for delivery to turn up is going to kill me!

    Hi

I thought I'd have a go at this mod and I'm pleased to say that it turned out really well. The improvement in picture quality is fantastic :) Thank you all very, very much for taking the time to share your knowledge here, it really helped me out a lot.

Is anyone available to do this mod if I pay them? I have zero skill with electronics.

I wonder if you can do Dreamcast to Component using this method?

Sure, just get a VGA to component transcoder. Good luck internalizing the transcoder though as there is a wholesale lack of space inside a Dreamcast.

Not too big whether the connector is SCART, VGA, or component. I'd just like to use 15khz and 31khz on XRGB mini, without swapping cable.

Rgb to component using the SNES encoder chip everyone was ranting about a few months ago would fit easily. Still have a few of them too

    Nice. Very tidy looking!

I do hope that you soldered the audio jack though, in this picture it's just twisted on... :S

    Wow! Impressive powers of observation!

Actually I did this on purpose :) I couldn't for the life of me work out which side was going to be left audio and which was going to be right, so as it was a 50-50 chance I'd get it wrong I decided to just twist the wires on to start with. It turned out I did guess wrong, so after this picture was taken I took the case apart and swapped the wires over. I can promise you they are soldered in place now :)

Bit of shameless advertising here: I just put my VGA modded DC up for auction on eBay - starting price 99p! :)

Hi I was wondering if anybody knows the max voltage for the capacitors used and the wattage of the resistors used as the person at my electronic store said this was important information I needed to be 100 percent sure I'm getting the right part but they did ended guessing and selling me some parts anyway but I think there may have been some miss communications as I think they sold me few wrong parts if anybody can tell me what they are it would be appreciated

    3 x CAP ELECTROLYTIC 2200uf 16VDC 105 deg

    2 x 4.7k ¼ watt Resistors

    2 x 150ohm ½ watt Resistors

    2 x 1N4148 Diodes

    1 x on/on bat handle switch
