I region changed my PAL Dreamcast so that it recognises itself as a NTSC video, JP region machine. What I am wondering is if there's anything like a crystal oscillator that makes the NTSC video actually PAL60 or if it is true NTSC video. If so then I bought this Asian Dreamcast in vain, thanks in advance.
It depends on how the board is strapped up. Some of the PAL consoles have a 0-ohm link in the R422 position - in this case, it will generate PAL and PAL60. If you want pure NTSC mode then make sure that R422, R424 and R425 are not populated and that R423, R426 and R427 have 47K (473) resistors installed. In this configuration, the encoding will follow the game.
Very interesting. I actually installed a link, as per the mmmonkey guide (Link.) a long time ago as a few backups I had weren't working properly. I'll have to check my motherboard then. Thanks for the detailed information! Edit: Opening it up, R423, R426 and R427 are populated by default. I guess the mod I performed actually did what I didn't want it to do! With these closed, and the others open and my machine set to NTSC video, I assume it is then?
Yeah, in that mode it will generate real NTSC - unlike the PSX, all the consoles used the same xtals, so there are no strange timing issues.
