That is not true. However, if you have modded your DC you can change the bios using Dreamshell, so that it loads automatically without needing the CD-Rom. The problem with Dreamshell over SD is two-fold. First the SD/Serial interface is too slow for almost every game, they become too choppy. Second, SWAT changed something in the Dreamshell code between versions 4.0 and 4.0 RC1, so ISO's configured for the previous version won't work on RC1, which is a better release.

The main question from me is: Will dreamshell work with the standard AV cables? Or, do I need to buy the S-Video cable? I don't inderstand why some say these specific cables are needed. I mean, ISO loaders for PS2 (ESDL,OPL) and GameCube (Swiss) don't need special cable to work/see the picture.

I've downloaded the latest dreamshell package from DC-SWAT and will burn it to CD-R when my SD adapter arrives within 1-2 weeks. Although if I must buy the S-Video cable I will. Just wanting to know before so I can be prepared.

I don't think the serial port is too slow, it's the code that's apparently a little sloppy at the moment I believe reserving too much RAM. Don't quote me on that, but I'm sure the author said he'd be able to get games running a lot smoother in later releases when he puts the loader on a diet. Though development seems to be sluggish at the moment.

If you're running releases native to your region you should be fine, no worries. Find out if the games you want to run are compatible and have decent speed, it's also kind of a pain in the arse to rip and convert your own games so I'd suggest downloading SDISO rips of the games you own prepared by someone else to be honest. Obviously I can't say where to get them but use a bit of common sense. :)

The only reason any console needs a special cable to display colour is because of the reasons I outlined before (differing colour standards over the world). If you're running NTSC region rips you're good to go. Though bear in mind, Dreamshell is PAL I think so the shell program itself might run in black and white, but this doesn't affect the games once they're loaded, they should be in colour on your setup.

That's good then. One more question, I downloaded the DC SD ripper and it's menu looks familiar to dreamshell's menu. The SD ripper runs in color and I'm guessing it's based off of dreamshell so hopefully it'll all work out. Thanks to both of you for the insight/help.

Whatever the reason, I found it to be difficult to get anything to work.

As for cables, there are a few games that won't work with a VGA 480p cable, and need to come through S-Video or Composite. That is simply a DC thing.

Just gotta check the compatibility list. I ran star wars racer, headhunter and another game I can't remember the name of all of which ran perfectly.

most as you know stutter and run like shit though.

Unreal! that was it, Unreal ran OK as far as I remember...

Oh so the AV cable is called composite. I should be good to go then because I don't plan on using 480p or anything like that.

I got a purple one sadly, would rather had blue but I can't complain because it does what it's supposed to do. All my DC games are backed up except my self-destroyed Sonic Adventure. (NEVER use a "Skip Dr. on a DC Disc because it may destroy it)
