I've tried burning numerous different versions/copies of the bootloader but none of them will boot. The dreamcast comes up with a "please insert game disc" error. I have a japanese dreamcast (launch model). What version of the bootloader do I need to make it work?
Most of the CDs that SWAT make seem to have problems on the old Japanese DCs with the Yamaha drives. I ended up having to rebuild the disk image to get it booting on mine - I used this: https://bootdreams.googlecode.com/files/bootdreams_106c.exe
It's an image building utility - basically, you extract the ip.bin and the executable from the disk and then build another disk image using that program.
Yeah - it was a while ago, but I do remember that the original disc that SWAT made didn't boot on my VA0 JP DC. When I rebuilt it it booted fine (and also worked on all my other units). Basically, you need to copy all the files from the disk and extract the IP.BIN from the boot sectors, then make an image using that utility and burn it.
Aahh none of the apps I need are available for mac, man this is giving me a headache! No pc in sight either.
I'm not really sure what to suggest - I think there is an OS-X cdrecord port, but I have no experience with it. I just tried it again using the "Dreamshell 4.0 RC1" CD - basically all you need to do is copy all the files off the CD into a directory, and then select that as the "selfboot folder" in BootDreams - I just got it to directly burn the CD, and have verified that it boots on my VA0 DC. The basic problem is that you need CD burning software that can correctly handle multisession images, and I'm not sure what can do that on the Mac.
