I just received a PSP test unit and, aside from the UMD drive not staying closed (gonna be fun to fix..), I'm having trouble running some games. Lumines 1 and 2 boot up just fine, and I played Lumines for like an hour with no issue. However, all the other games I've tried so far on the UMD show up right away on the menu, and the little video plays and all, but when I boot it it hangs at the first loading screen. Any ideas? Some setting I need to change? Drive wearing out?
Games that haven't booted: Ridge Racers (JPN) retail A preview version of Pursuit Force 2 Final Fantasy 7 Crises Core US retail. I'll try some more games..
I had the same problem with the UMD drive not closing and managed to fix it, but now it gets stuck and doesn't open normally with the button if there's a UMD game inside. If you figure out how to fix it, make sure to post about it please.
Actually I managed the fix the UMD drive not closing fairly easily. I realized that both the metal pieces of the latch were there, they just weren't making contact anymore. I couldn't pry down on the metal piece on the UMD door, so I gently pushed up on the little metal latch that moves when you push the eject button. I just used a flathead screw driver. It didn't take much at all.
That's exactly what I did for mine, but I had to bend it at such an angle to get it to latch properly that it doesn't unlatch properly.
Is it possible to bend it back down so that it juust latches? Ok, here's my list for tonight: Working: Lumines Lumines 2 Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max Parappa the Rapper *Bonus: You get a lightshow with the GPO lights while in game. Not Working: Ridge Racers Gunpey FF7 Crises Core Gran Turismo Pursuit Force 2 - Boots quite far, I can name my save file and everything, doesn't hang until i hit story mode, then just loads forever No idea what the hell. Having an extended Lumines 2 sesh now.
What firmware version are you on? Make sure all the GPI switches are turned off, some games make use of those to enable features like loading assets from host0 Your UMD discs may also be dirty/scratched or drive's laser on its way out. Try the games as DVD and/or npumdimg to be sure it's not a drive issue.
6.35 Testing Tool Rev B The switches are all off, but thanks for the info, was wondering what they did. Most my discs are in like new condition. The one disc I have that's visually well used (Street Fighter, case comes apart, disc has some marks), boots right up. Thanks, I'll look up how to get a burned retail game to properly boot on this test tool, so far I haven't had luck. npumdimg is totally new to me, so I'll do some research. Edit: Yeah this totally ended up being failing umd drive. It works, but it doesn't like to stay working. I guess some games are just easier for it to read or something.
