So I bought a DS3 off Amazon New. I have had good luck in the past with Amazon as they are pretty good at weeding out fakes. However, this last one I got is so good I couldn't even believe it was fake for about an hour. After comparing it with my real DS3s I was finally able to confirm this is a POS fake (and after using it, Six Axis is alllll off on the fake.) So which one is the fake? If you guessed the one on the right you would be wrong! The PS3 classic white is an old school looking white, like PS1 Slim white. However, not everyone buys white controllers so hopefully I took some photos to help those find, spot, and report fakes. (I'm serious report fakes! Especially the ones that try to pass as real DS3s) How to spot a fake rule 1: Check back labeling. Real label: Has FCC labeling Fake Label: Has BS Compliance standard labeling Also note, model number doesn't even match model number on the box: How to spot fake rule 2: Fakes are bad at the painted add on labels. Real Controller: The Dualshock 3 and Six-Axis logos look professionally done. Fake Controller: Dualshock 3 is a mess of fade and smearing, the 3 is the worst it's italicized and smeared, the six axis logo is faded. Real Controller: PS center button looks like this. (Also note Sony, Start, Select are matte not matallic, but that will vary by controller color.) Fake Controller: PS center button isn't as defined. Also Sony logo is not center and wrong color. How to spot fake rule 3: Indents on the back are too sharp. Real Controller: Barely can see the indent on the controller number labeling. Fake Controller: The rectangle indent is noticeable from a mile away. Other things to note: This box is 90% of the time a fake: Sony hasn't used this box in ages. If some how you manage to find a deadstock of this box, it looks like this in real form: Also, my fake controller came in not perfect condition, there was a noticeable scratch and some dirt on the side. Sony OEM almost never has any these things happen in new controllers. Pass this info along, hope it helps. Tons of sellers these days are passing off these fakes it's sad really. Thanks for the info, but can you notice anything when you use it ? Many people have reported that fake DS3's analog sticks don't work like they should, in game you would have problems sprinting ( pressing down the analog stick to run).
It's one of the reasons i never buy official controllers online. Most sellers and distributors don't know (or care) for the difference between official and fake products. Some fakes are very obvious, but when the box is similar like the one you posted, 90% of the people wouldn't see it. Sony recently changed the box, but there's already almost perfect fakes of it. Yes when the analog sticks are off center you can't press L3 or R3. Six-Axis is way off. (very noticeable in games like little big planet) The stiffness of the Analog sticks is different than a real DS3. It's hard to describe but you can tell something is off while you are playing. It's really bad online, the store I bought it off of is the number 1 seller of DS3s on Amazon right now. So many people don't know they are being sold fakes.
On Aliexpress you can get these for as low as $12. But when people sell these as real, that just pisses me off.
One other thing I noticed, the font on the 1 for L1 is way off. From the pics you can tell, it's huge. Though, one thing that pisses me off to no end is people selling bootleg discs. I almost guarantee if I go on Craigslist, someone will be offering burned Xbox 360, PS3, etc games for sale. If I wanted crappy burned discs, I'd burn them myself.
Yeah, it's clearly illegal and against Craigslist Terms of Service so I always flag them for removal.

(dodged the bullet because of it) not seen the full boxed version like the one posted, but a few loose pads in ca$h-converters. wanted to grip on thinking they were official, going for tengbp each, which seems like a top bargain on the surface...til one looked closer. alerted the staffs, and they purged stock, destroyed it all. management is considering refusing ANY future ps3 pad acquisitions. they've brought the floor personnel up to speed, but they're not the brightest of the bunch. (smart folks DON'T do that kind of pawn/RETAIL work, same for public service, a bane) they understand that and feel it maybe more effort than it's worth to ENFORCE the training. ... even if they don't touch another ps3 pad again, at least it eliminates the possibility of them selling bunk goods and getting flak on reputation. again, appreciate the tip=off. Just FYI, that label on the back of the controller is perfectly valid - IDA is the approvals agency in Singapore, and the ones that are sold in Asian markets look exactly like that. I just pulled out the DS3 that came with my original PS3, and the label is identical to the one in your photo except for the color (it's a black controller).
Good post. Do they get around the firmware update that blocked fake controllers? Report to Sony and Amazon - the seller needs to be dealt with. Here in the UK, I'd suggest contacting Trading Standards. I think your equivalent might be the BBB - will they take it up?
Is this from the actual listing by Amazon that says by Sony or the myriad of other listings? You should add a link so we know what to AVOID. It is hard to find a new controller unless you go to the store. The one that came with my system is a flimsy piece of sh-.
