A neat little hack that was done, the BIOS from an HKT-0120 Dreamcast Development Box was dumped. The same method used to dump the BIOS of a retail Dreamcast via the serial method was used to dump this BIOS. The only additional item required was an RS-232 null serial cable.

In order to dump the BIOS of a retail Dreamcast unit, either dcload-serial (For use with a serial cable) or dcload-ip (for use with a Broadband Adapter) has to be burnt onto a CD-R disc. Unfortunately, the HKT-0120 cannot read CD-R discs, so dcload-serial had to be compiled into a GD-ROM project. From there, the project was built and ran on the HKT-01, enabling the BIOS to be dumped. The BIOS was then tested on the Sega Dreamcast emulator, Chankast, and turned out to work!

Cool! any chance for an 'release' of the bios? I'd like to play around with it :)

    Hey

This Is just an idea couldnt some one use this bios and that bios flash method and make any dreamcast read gd-rs without a system disc 2 or a swap method?

That would cause System disc 2 prices to drop a little hopefully since now there are other ways to play gd r's. Too bad still because you can't put the discs into a conventional cd drive and play but things get better

Edit also wouldn't mind the bios if they could be emailed

Maybe you'd get it to read gd-r, but it'd not be region changer compatible ( so stuck with a JAP dc) and NEVER region free, since this bios is a JAP one, the hkt-0120 uses a switch to change region (so it's never region free, but you choose the region) and it seems impossible to dump a EU or NTSC|U bios, the dumped data always is a JAP bios(maybe because the eu and ntsc bios are somewhere else in memory).

You could still flash (or solder instead of the real bios, since I don't think a bios flash is possible via a cd [region changer write in the flash, not the bios]) a retail Dreamcast with this bios (or with the hacked version of this bios wich is mil-cd compatible[a.k.a. bootleg compatible]) but you'd have to flash a hkt-0120 flash too, since it's formatted diferently(full of FF instead of 00 and no aparent region code.)

A maybe possible thing would be to use a gd-r of dc-load serial + systemdisc2 to dump the bios of a region free DC (I think segadirect sold some on the web when the DC died, but they aren't mil-cd) then to add the mil-cd exploit in it (not that hard since a guy did it on the hkt-0120 bios) then if you got the time, add the hkt-0120 boot-animation to it. (Region free, mil-cd, cool startup bios would be created)

(I still ain't sure if it would be possible to add a gd-r compatibility to this modified bios ... )

Sorry for the long reading !

Sorry to majorly bump this thread, but I am curious about the HKT-0120 Bios.

Why is it not possible to dump the bios with the dip switches flipped for each region? (eg. EU, JP, and US Bios)

How do the dip switches alter the region of the bios? Has anyone followed the traces for each switch to see what they connect to? I'm curious to know if the dip switches are something simple, like a resistor between two legs of the bios chip, or something much more complex.

Also, is it correct to say that the HKT-0120 Flash is always empty? I have opened one with a hex editor and it seems to be full of 'F's, but it also makes reference to Sonic Adventure!?

    TIA ;-)

I can't tell about the F's but the Sonic referrences are most likely because Mark played Sonic Adventure and didn't cleared his flash before dumping it ...
