Not interested in speech synthesis boxes really, just trying to find out some early games with vocal audio samples. Looks like Berzerk wins it, anyway.
I own the Intellivoice, and I can tell you it's far more advance than most other voice playback examples of the era. The speech is not really integral for the games that use it, but I'd be lost trying to play Space Spartans or B-17 Bomber without it, as it does relay important information and thus, becomes part of the interface of the games. I also own that Tron game that uses the module, but I've never gotten it to work. I'm thinking it's broken . The other two games, though, make a lot more use of the voice function than just ambient for the game. It's an important part of gameplay. It's also very retro-chic. I enjoy playing it.
Not true. What year did Berzerk come out? (GameFAQs says 1983) Remember I said Spike on the Vectrex (which has some samples "Eek, help, Spike!") came out in 1982. Are there any earlier games?
Is B-17 Bomber a different game then B-52 Bomber, or just a different title for a different region? B-52 did have a synthesized voice announce the title, but I don't believe there was any voice in game. Though I was only 12 so my memory might be a little off.
hmm impossible mission was one of the first i can remember in the non console area but dont ask me which time around that was maybe theres a port for nes ?
My best pick is: Major League Baseball for Intellivision- developed in 1979, released in 1980. Speech in this used the consoles sound chip and did not use the Intellivoice. If fact it is reported that Invt. Marketing put a stop to any further such use, fearing it would hurt sales of the Intellivoice module. Others: Atari 2600: Quadrun, Open Sesame Atari 8Bit: Berzerk Odyssey 2 also had an add on Voice Module, "The Voice". The TI-99/4A also had an add-on voice module which added voice to (cartridge?) games like Alpiner and Parsec.
Everywhere I've looked says Spike came out in 1983 as well, but either way, it sounds like Major League Baseball was a few years earlier anyway. Pretty impressive stuff, I had no idea speech was in games this early.
some soccer game on ATARI (can't remember which atari, i was way too little) that had the picture of Pele on the cart, i think I recall hearing what seemed to be a playback (Very poo quality). Can anyone else confirm this?
Pele's Soccer, as far as I can recall (long time I haven't seen one) doesn't have any playback. But I cannot prove it, though I'll do some research
