Hey all. I recently picked up an odd Xbox controller at my local Goodwill (about an hour away from the Microsoft campus), and have been able to find zero information in it. In my search I came across this forum, and I imagine you guys if anyone would have some input. Pics: http://imgur.com/a/2hVRZ As you can see, the top half is from the Xbox "S" Controller, with two holes drilled for LEDs (one red one white). The bottom however is some kind of custom shell which houses two AA batteries. It also has two holes carved out near the front for what I imagine is an early chatpad connecter. The piece near the top which normally houses the cable, instead has only a smooth black piece of plastic (presumably for whatever wireless transmitter). There are no memory card slots. There are two stickers on the underside: 1) "This device has not been approved by the FCC. This device is not, or may not be offered for sale or lease.sale or leasing is prohibited until approved by the FCC." 2) "POC Dec. 2003 Gamepad V2 090" My initial impression is either a very early 360 prototype, or potentially a wireless controller for the first Xbox. Any insight that could be provided would be greatly appreciated :cool-new:
That's certainly an interesting find! Regardless of the platform, It's definitely a link between the Controller 'S' and the X360 gamepad. I'm going to guess that it was developed for use with the original Xbox for research and debugging purposes as they were attempting to implement the technology into project Xenon. Typically, wireless Xbox controllers featured a separate receiver that plugged into the controller port and housed memory card slots. The original Xbox communication kit had a 3.5 mm mic adapter that plugged into the memory card slot. Having a comm port on the controller would allow for the headset to be used independent of this 3.5mm adapter and memory card slots altogether. If it wasn't designed for transitional prototyping, it may have simply been a normal controller that was planned to come out at some point during the original Xbox's life-cycle. It would have been great with the Halo 2 launch to say the least. Does it have any sort of I/O switch?
Interesting!!! SUPER interesting. I'd gather it's an early 360 controller hence the non-existent memory slots, but who knows. Borman will probably explode when seeing this lol.
Hard to tell wether it's meant for Xbox or Xbox 360, considering that the first Alpha Kits were issued (!) ~February/March 2004. Could sure be an 360 concept. You probably don't have an early 360 (Alpha or early Beta stage?) to test it on? EDIT: First actual Xbox 360 Wireless Controller (Radon) were issued late 2004, if I'm not mistaken.
:hororr: Awesome find... internals would be interesting, but properly its sealed by that lovely sticker. dont peal that off
Hah Id certainly love to take a look at it. if the time comes where the original poster wants to get rid of it, Id always love a message Until then, Ill just continue to be confused like everyone else.
Pretty cool find! I remember finding a large quantity of Dakota and Hammerhead controllers at the Gamestops near my area when the original Xbox was just taking off. I guess you never know what you'll find.
My guess would be that it's a prototype for a first party wireless Xbox controller (which if I'm not mistaken Microsoft never released). Also the Xbox logo doesn't happen to house any button by chance (a la the Xbox guide button)?
The second picture if you look closely you can see a button and a jack in the controller. I guess the button is for sync or power or SOMETHING. The jack I presume is for the 360 chat function. So I'm gonna say this seems like a very early "hidden-away-in-locked-boxes-so-no-one-can-ever-know-it-exists" Xbox 360 wireless prototype. But then I know jack-shit about the 360. I stick to original...
