... with their new maximum shipping policy (click). While this might help with the idiots charging $20 to ship a DVD, tell me if this portion makes sense:

    Books > 101-500 $20.00
    Books > 11-50 Items $8.00
    Books > 51-100 Items $15.00
    Books > 6-10 Items $6.00
    Books > More than 500 $30.00
    Books > Up to 5 Items $6.00

    Compared to:

    DVDs > 101-250 Items $30.00
    DVDs > 11-50 Items $15.00
    DVDs > 251-500 Items $60.00
    DVDs > 501-1000 Items $120.00
    DVDs > 51-100 Items $25.00
    DVDs > Up to 10 Items $10.00

Really? I would love to know what shipper you are supposed to use to ship 100 books for $15 or why ebay thinks DVD's are more expensive to ship than books.

Wow, that is going to suck. I'm glad though that they do have a maximum shipping policy, now it just needs to be rooted into reality.

Just received an email from eBay:

They're seriously taking the piss now. Near 10% for hosting a little bit of a text and a small jpg? Pfft...

Oh, and to add a whole lot of insult to injury, they are going to start blocking sellers with (detailed) ratings of less then 4.3 (on a 5 point scale). That means if you get rated "good" (4/5), then you are not good enough for ebay.

Anybody want to help setup a new auction site?

eBay have got too greedy and gone mad. It's as simple as that.

The new UK price scheme is a joke. A basic shop costs £6 a month now, but will be £14.99. However, the cost of listing a buy it now item will only be 20p to a shopkeeper, as opposed to 40p for a normal seller. Whoop-de-f**kin-do! That's still MORE than it currently is if you keep your start price low - 10p for an item under £1 currently.

I love the bit where they say they're aiming to reduce listing prices by increasing the final fee prices.... and then they show their BIN listing prices, which are in effect going up!! WTF are they on?!?!

The structuring of the maximum shipping cost is crazy, too. Does that apply to shipping internationally? Oh, and they seem to force you to accept PayPal now, should the buyer wish to use it! It is a monopoly - they need investigating.

The sad fact of the matter is, as much as we need a new auction site, eBay has the users. People aren't going to list on a site that has fewer bidders, and people aren't going to bother checking a site that has fewer items. It's a vicious circle.

It is a great shame that Yahoo pulled out of the auction game so early on in the West, really.

OK, I looked at the US maximum prices for video games. Umm, they're mad!! $6 max for vintage games? $3 max for WoW? What, even if it is the original cardboard package with 4 or 5 discs? $15 to ship a system?

Oh, and the UK seller BIN thing. Let's have an example.

Say I have a shop selling items for 99p buy it now. I believe my current charges would be as follows:

    £6 a month for a basic shop.

    £0.10 listing fee.

    7.5% final value fee = 7.425p (I'm sure that's rounded to 8p)

So we're looking at them getting 18p from every 99p item I sell, i.e. 18%.

Therefore, I would have to sell 8 items per month to pay my shop fee and make a profit (of 48p - assuming my items cost me nothing, of course).

    Now, under the new rules.....

    £14.99 a month for a basic shop.

    £0.20 listing fee.

    9.9% final value fee = 9.801p (round to 10p)

So we're now looking at them getting 30p from every 99p item I sell, i.e. 30%. They've nearly doubled their charges - impressive!!

I would now have to sell 22 items per month to pay my shop fee and make a profit (which would now be only 19p)!

99p items are a bit unrealistic. Let's go further.

OK, I'm now selling £10 BIN items.

Currently, I would have a 25p listing fee and be paying 7.5%, which is 75p, so they're getting £1 of my £10.

Under the new rules, the listing is only 20p, but I pay 9.9%. eBay will get £1.19 of my £10.

Whilst this doesn't sound quite so bad, it means that I now have to sell 2 items a month instead of 1 to break even.

What about £50 items? Well, here's where it changes slightly.

At the moment, I pay £1 per item listing fee, and 4.5%, which is £2.25. I therefore pay a total of £3.25 out of my £50 to eBay. That's 6.5%

In future, I will only pay a 20p listing fee, but 5.9%, which is £2.95. Therefore, I am making a small saving, as I'll only be paying eBay £3.15. That's 6.3%. However, I'm still losing nearly £10 a month due to that increased shop fee!

That's an amazing inflation! Oh, and most DVDs in the UK will sell for under £5 second hand. So if you're thinking of selling DVDs on eBay on a regular basis as a shop... DON'T!! Oddly enough, the rules are different in America, where the cost of listing DVDs has actually gone down!

It would pretty much have to be USPS Media Mail. Some experimentation with the online price calculator shows that you can send 40 pounds of books from coast to coast for $16. For the average reading book, it probably works out.

On the whole I'm pretty scandalized by this new round of changes though. If all the sellers get driven away, I'll have no one to buy from.

This is just ridiculous and Ebay seem to have gotten gready and decided we want more money from those using our site.

I can't see myself using ebay anymore or very little because of the way they are going. Its just not worth it at least for the kinds of things i normally sell like games which at most are not going over £10 and very rarely selling an item worth more than £10-15
