I don't know what's worse the inflated price or the fact that 15 people have bought one!

    Hi! :)

As a fair-weather eBay seller, I think I can help to explain why you see listings like this.

When a listing temporarily sells out, the seller will bump the price up to a ridiculous amount to ensure nobody will buy the item until they have restocked.

It may make more sense to some to end the listing (or specify the correct amount available in the first place), but they will lose their standing in the 'Best Match' section of the search results. Also, eBay can be fiddly and I imagine it to be easier to edit the price than to re-list the item. As the seller has paid a generous amount for their store subscription, it can be easy to see why they want the most out of their listing.

In this example, the seller has other very similar items for the more reasonable price of around $12. Also, you can see from clicking on the '15 sold' link that these items sold for $13.99.

Still, these sales were almost a year ago so this seller is a bit guilty of neglecting his store, at least :-D

Right! I would rather have better stock control, which would include keeping tabs of what sells well and restocking in good time, than make myself look greedy by listing a product I don't have (and would then have to obtain if someone bought it - quickly!) for a silly price. That just puts people off buying from you. It's really easy to relist an item.

If you're not going to restock it for that long, you may as well remove it. Standing in the best match is pointless if you don't sell the item. Does it really bump you down if you sell out and then relist? I would have thought listing for far more than other sellers would have been equally detrimental.

eBay has all kinds of weird algorithms that determine your best match ranking, so yeah, sellers will do 'every trick in the book to get higher up in the rankings.

Not an eBay scam (for once) but a Craigslist one. Someone was trying to offload their collection of about 145 uncommon/rare PS1/PS2 games, for a grand total of $3,750. However, they used the Price Charting website, so they had a few odd values:

    1. Burnout 2 Point of Impact (New) $163
    2. Gungrave Overdose (New) $74
    3. Mana Khemia (New) $68

and a few others. I don't think anyone is going to buy a new copy of Burnout 2 for $150+

I find that most of the deals/steals I get are at in person auctions. I guess people are lazy?

Ebay is just full of idiots. I personally cant stand the scalpers. Amibos for example. They will hit every store they can and buy out the rare chase ones. I get why they do it but its pretty scum.

I usually get my deals at thrift shops or clearance sections, I don't do in person auctions for various reasons.

I should imagine that by now, the listing has 'gone stale' and won't have any standing in Best Match. This technique isn't very effective if the listing isn't replenished for so long, and I certainly don't use or endorse this practice. It does make the seller look greedy, as you've said :)
