Ebay....Is there any point of complaining about this?

Ok, so my birthday just came and went and I'm a glutton for punishment so, as a gift, I got myself a brand spanking new NTSC Amiga CD32 from China on ebay. See Auction:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=390033993401

So...It got here yesterday...and it was packaged by a fucking idiot. The system box was wrapped in newspaper (most of the way around) then bubble wrap, then wrapped in plastic...a plastic which is thinner than a plastic grocery bag. Box has taken a beating and accordioned in one side...Now I expected some shelfware, but shitty packaging did most of the damage. Console works, but I've ben deprived of a nice looking box.

Added bonus: No manuals or warranty cards or any of that good shit. Once again, I know it's been in China and is over a decade old, but it has those things in the picture and I wanted them.

Long story short: What's the purpose of buying a new console when you get a beat up box and don't get all of the things that come with one?

Should I do anything/complain? Or do I have to just take this one like a man and let my unnatural hatred for China increase just a little bit?

You're a buyer, therefore you can bitch about it, and keep the AMIGA AND GET your money back. It's win win. Report it.

Wouldn't that make me an ass and a half and help me to contribute to what's horribly wrong with eBay as it is?

...yeah...maybe...but I'm still pissed off...and I know I wouldn't have shipped anything like this in a million years...

If the douche had packaged it right in the first place then you wouldn't be in this predicament.

File a complaint! Your goods didn't arrive as they appeared in the auction therefore you have every right to do us.

I hate it when people don't package stuff correctly, causes no end of troubles.

Well, I sent them a message stating my complaints, so I'll see how they respond. Considering that this seller sells about a million things a year, it doesn't seem likely that I'll hear anything back.

What happens if I complain (I've never had to before). Do they just give me back my money? ...I think that seems a bit unfair considering that I'll still be getting a game system out of it. Or do I have to go through the hullabaloo of sending it back to them too? I wouldn't really want to do that as (1) I imagine I'll get stuck with the bill for that and (2) I do actually want the system.

Also, what kind of complaint? Paypal? Or is there an eBay complaint I should do?

Paypal will give you a refund if you file a dispute claiming 'not as described'.

This might be on the condition that you return the item and provide proof of postage but if you really want to be an ass about it (which after the months of shit I've had with ebay I'd sure wanna be) then wrap up some wet tissue paper and slap a tracking number on it. When HE complains about it say that it must have disintegrated due to poor packaging. He will learn his lesson.

Ungh...this licks balls. According to the paypal pages, if I do that, I have to pay shipping, and then I'm out a game system. And theres...Oh...one other seller that sells NTSC CD32s on eBay who sells them for more. Lesigh. Hopefully they'll respond to my message and agree to send me the manuals and whatnot from another system or something (maybe refund a few bucks). I dunno.

(Though I like free things as much as the next person, I couldn't bring myself to fuck someone over, though I feel moderately fucked, myself).

Since the system isn't as described, you have every right to complain. I know I would - and do (the amount of sellers who wrap stuff in only a single layer of brown paper is mind-boggling).

Since you don't want to return it, you could file a PayPal dispute that only requests a partial refund (choose an amount you deem to be fair). No idea if PayPal still do they, but they used to. It's certainly worth looking in to.

;-) I was of course kidding, I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder when it boils down to ebay (who doesn't?)

Why not get a refund, send the unit back and then sit on the money until another one appears? If it's something you really want then it's worth waiting for and I'm sure as the months roll on by you'll have more cash to add to ensure you get an extra minty one.

Also, why specifically pick up a model from china. The PAL models can be set to output NTSC without any modification.

As I understood it, the PAL systems will always out put PAL color system no matter what...though you can switch them to 60hz with a software setting. I do have a TV that can do PAL. Also saves me from having to buy a step up coverter... Add the allure of getting a New system and it didn't seem to be too hard a choice.

I dunno, I guess I'll have to think it over. I waited soooo long to get this one and if I don't get one now, the money might get put toward something else (various bills, etc, whatever comes up)...and I had planned to play with it during my spring break...which ends soon and then I'm back to the terrrible, miserable grind of school. On top of that, I'll probably lose 20 bucks shipping it back to them.

    Note: Jesus H, there's a CD32 Icon!

Edit: I'm enjoying the system though, so maybe I'll end up picking a PAL system up down the line sometime. (A few games have NTSC issues).

My problem is that if I were a richer man I'd have more time to play with this stuff and would have to fuss/stress less about whether or not getting screwed. Considering that right now $20 is my personal monthly entertainment budget, this is really stressful.

the ebay auction states that the seller has 2 units, so make him send another new one with everything included and good packaging this time and send this one back..

Can you not still request a partial refund/claim via paypal, or has that policy changed now? Last year I bought some stuff that arrived slightly beat up due to poor packaging so I filed a claim for 1/2 the price paid to reflect this. Got the refund and kept the goods, entirely above board.

If not, fuck it, be a C**T. I'm so sick of pathetic Ebay sellers I no longer care about doing the right thing! (Not that I've yet had an opportunity to do the wrong thing mind)

Never buy anything from china that can't fit in a small bubble mailer. EVER.

    Their packing standards are terrible.

I got something from china, they had cut the side off a block of styro,
ripped into it, shoved the item in, then taped the side back on, and then
used tape to cocoon it. It did not end well..

You're right. Last thing I bought from China was a Neo Geo. Came with the Neo Geo box wrapped in thick greenish plastic...sort of like a combination of a heavy plastic bag and wax paper, wrapped up with twine. The box had some wear before I bought it...but it was much worse due to the trip. I about cried. That was just someone off Neo-geo.com. I got a good deal, so I chalked it up to dopiness and wrote it off.

I sent a message which I imagine they'll ignore. If that comes and goes, I'll request a partial refund. It was a hundred w/ shipping, but I did get a minty console...so I imagine 20-30 would be fair refund, I guess.

I've had a bit of an epiphany about the fact that I don't really need the box...It's kinda ugly and I don't have anywhere to display it...and its huge...but well...I paid for it.

Lesson: Don't buy big things from China. Again.

It'll still feel dirty though taking money back, considering that I'm pretty much guaranteed to win the dispute.

Well, you should certainly put your complaint to the seller first, and see how he wants to deal with it. So well done there! You're quite at right to complain that bits were missing as it clearly states they should be there. I wouldn't hesitate to point out that it should have been placed in a cardboard box, either. C'mon, you can go to pretty much any store and ask them for a box!

I've been lucky, I guess. Bought some large stuff from China and it's got here well packed. Good sellers, I guess.

Though I won't lose sleep over a lack of manuals or warranty cards, the fun of buying a new console is all the new stuff that comes with it. I find that sort of stuff interesting. I would like what I paid for, though. Yeah, I'm happy I got the console, but why should I let someone get away with being lazy and cheap and still get all my money?

    Five Reasons:

    1. A convenient way to play pretty much the entire Amiga library on your TV Screen conveniently.
    2. No floppy disks.
    3. Cool Funky Controller
    4. Excellent conversation piece/rare console that actually has some decent games on it.
    5. A huuuge library of games, many of which don't suck. I look forward to playing a ton of Adventure games from the leisure of my couch. Beneath a Steel Sky, Here I come.

    Bonus:

    6. I don't have one yet AND I wanted an Amiga of some sort anyway.
