    Hello all,

Just curious why when people are selling PS3 FAT's on ebay they make a point of stating it has early firmware? Reason why I ask is, a PS3 FAT I have been looking at had 3.66 on it but the game that was in the drive (not my console) asked to update. So if you can't play later games on the console why the big interest?

    Cheers Pete

Early firmware = hack-ability. 3.55 is the butter zone, and the CFW available for hacking PS3 games is based off of 3.55.

If it's low, you also have a better ability to downgrade to 3.55, where you can disable the force update and still play your games. Sure, you're at risk of getting banned, but who cares these days.

I care, because I use Netflix on my PS3, and I believe Netflix on PS3 requires access to PSN. What is the purpose of hacking a PS3 other than for running pirated software? Are there homebrew/emulators available for it?

    Not sure. I've never tried...

I honestly couldn't care less, but I guess I should've said that that was my opinion. I haven't touched my PS3 in months.

You can also run GNU/Linux on it, or your own homebrew if you're a developer. And yes, there's already several homebrew for it.

If you want to hack for Piracy then do it for PC. I still got Original 60GB PS3 on 3.41FW which is better and alot of people want to buy it from me for 400 Euros. That is nuts if you ask.

I think my Slim PS3 had 3.41 on it for awhile. Whatever one it was you could use some USB device to run homebrew and ISOs. Or maybe it was something different. I do remember you only needed the USB thing once to install it. It was so pointless for me though that I took the HDD out of my PS3 (I had upgraded it) and put the original back in it and reused the bigger one in a media pc. I didn't see the point in the emulators and the piracy didn't appeal either.

I guess one in 100 jailbroken PS3s are used for homebrew, the rest are clearly used to play pirated games

Last time I was in LATAM any mom&pops shop (still popular over there) that sold PS3s could do the process for you, some even offered a PS3 bundled with a 500GB USB drive full of games

    "homebre-what?" they told me

Has there ever even been a homebrew game worth playing? Pretty sure "running homebrew" is just a euphenism for "running emulators and pirated games".

Since most games on the ps3 suck you better get one that you can pirate the games, check a list of 100 games and buy the only 5 that worth half the price they cost.

Not just that you can run windows xp and windows 7 (threw a dualboot setup through linux). I haven't tried Mac osx, I fear I would run Into A shit ton of problems if I did try.

Don't forget to code your own, audio, gpu, usb, cpu, ram drivers for windows xp and 7 while running both via emulation on linux system that still have under development drivers.

It wouldn't really be a dualboot... Dualboot implies native installation; Windows does not run under Cell platform, so native installation is impossible.
You could install Linux, then some virtualization software maybe? (not sure about this) and then run Windows in the Virtualized environment... But seriously (and I do use and like Windows, but...) WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYONE WANT TO RUN WINDOWS IN A PS3?!?!?!?!
I understand if you want to run linux, which can be compiled and ran natively, but Windows?? It just makes no sense.

Unless you could find a virtualbox-like app that was really optimized for CELL then Win7 and OSX will run like shit, or not at all

Not 7, but just happens to be faster than I expected... Maybe someone could put a minimal win95 (instead of xp) install and play diabloII or starcraft...

    [EDIT]

Has already been done for Starcraft http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQHlFPRPhHA

Or you could wine and save you tons of trouble or even better use a real PC.

W.I.N.E. => Wine Is Not an Emulator

PS3 and PC aren't the same architecture (Cell vs x86) so wine would be completely useless. Wine is just a compatibility layer to handle the libraries and "mimic", not emulate, the windows OS under GNU/Linux. Qemu does the x86 emulation here. A mix of wine/qemu for minimal instructions emulation would in theory be possible (i.e. saving the overhead of running win95) but it seems not a lot of people are interested in such a project, it might change with the advent of arm-based laptops and the unavoidable rise of people asking why their old programs don't works on their arm pc/tablet with wine...

Well, I still don't understand why on earth would anyone want to run Windows in a PS3, considering that it is not running natively... (other than investigation and educational purposes)
It's good to see people porting DOSBox and stuff like that and getting Windows to boot up, and even trying to get it to run at full speed... but it's still no reason to try and use it for gaming within the console.

I don't think that the person who did this is a 70 years old lady that wanted to use the ps3 her grandson brought home to play solitaire. The person who did this probably is a complete geek, like some of us are, that just wanted to mess around. Also, if you don't have a computer it's a viable way to play starcraft...

Now let's play gameboy tetris into a gb emu for a n64, ran in a n64 emu on a win95 install on qemu on a ps3... I'd personally have a lot of fun doing this, but I must point out that the "tetris" part is the less important here...
