I've finally decided to get round to getting an eee pc.

So, my question is, does the size of the SSD matter? I will probably upgrade the Ram myself so I'm thinking I may get the cheapest model with a 2GB SSD and will likely be putting the majority of files/applications onto SD cards. Will the small size of the SSD affect the speed of the OS/applications etc? I'll probably put Win XP on it, but put it on SD too.

thinking of getting one of these aswell.. im leaning more towards the 4gig version tho. ive heard theres a bigger one on the way aswell (12gig?)

id love to hear some feedback on these pcs if anyone has one :) pros and cons like, ill be using mine for casal surfing, playback of movies and MP3s via an external HDD.. what kind of ins and outs does it have?

btw is there an even smaller laptop (or another brand with simila size) out there?

Get the 4GB one and a good usbdrive. The 8GB one is almost the price of a bigger laptop, so forget it.

I heard it can run several games at decent quality/speed.

I'm on mine right now. Definitely buy the 4G; if you get the 2G you'll find that the RAM is soldered in, as others have said.

Most of my applications run fine, with the slight exception of Firefox. It has a tendency to have the occasional slowdown, but that's more due to the fact that Firefox 2 is a huge memory hog and I suspect that it will be a non-issue when Firefox 3 is released.

I wrote a full review at Newegg (look under the black 4G Surf reviews). I'm "J. Cardigan."

i too have one, and love it!

Put XP on it for the second time two weeks ago. its n-lited and takes up a litt le under 700mbs. I have an 8gb A-Data SD card for storing my applications and files. Boot time is about 15-20 second, very quick. This is running without a pagefile too (page files don't do any good for the SSD)

Game wise, its pretty damm decent. Emulation wise, it can run almost any emulator at good speed (n64 and dreamcast run pretty decent) I had just finished playing Gothic 1 off of usb on it. Half-Life 1, and MOH Allied Assualt ran very well too...

Heck, if you really want to push it, put AutoCAD 2008 on it and do some 3d drawings!

I'm really surprised at the graphics capabilities of it: Morrowind, DC emu, MOH and someone said a modified version of Oblivion in the other thread? That'll make a good library distraction

oblivion won't run very well, and looks worse than err.....elder scrolls dagger fall on the EeePC....

Have you looked into getting a EeePC 4G Surf edition? It's the same as the regular 4g minus the web cam and 50 bucks cheaper. Mine still had the RAM door despite rumours that it does not

I have an Eee PC as well, I love it but I don't use it that much. It mostly sits on my desk and looks cute :p. Most places I go my macbook fits just as nicely. Otherwise it would be awesome. The drive is small so if

Also if you look into the forums at eeeuser.com, you will find that the 4G Surf if its white doesn't have the ram door, but does have the replaceable memory. The black 4G Surf does have the ram door though.

I read somewhere that most black 4G Surfs have the RAM door, and most white 4G Surfs don't, but that there are exceptions for both. My black one does.

I meant older, less spec games, like CS, WoW, HL2 or HW2.

    Oblivion needs a graphics card

Any of those would probably run fine. The Source engine scales extremely well so I'd imagine it would be quite playable.

I tried DOSBox on mine earlier today, and while my framerate in Arena wasn't particularly impressive, it doesn't run much better on my desktop. I think it has something to do with the settings I'm using. Tyrian 2000 seemed to run fine last time I tried it, but I didn't get the chance to get in-game today (can't be playing shooters in class ;)).

HL2 runs fine, not so sure about Episode2 since theres some graphic-intensive scenes.

HW2 I say only the missions, cuz the multiplayer gets very slow when you have many units at the same time.

    I know WoW is playable.

Bah the more I read about it, the more I want to pick one up and just mod it for fun. Need to find a cheap, lightly used one down the line
