I'm not surprised really, I noticed there issues have been really thin lately. With video game blog news out there now, there is no way a magazine can keep up these days. I really miss how they were in the 90s, but those days are gone now. Reminds me of when gamefan ended, I was bummed, they had alot of really good stuff.
The sad thing is not that EGM is dead, It's that UGO shitcanned 2/3 of 1up staff with it. They also canned the podcasts & 1up show. =( Thoes were my favorite parts of the 1up network. Not to mention their reviews were pretty decent.
Hmm, I never went to 1up and I haven't had an EGM magazine in ages. Personally my favorite gaming mags right now are Play and Game Informer. Mostly Play. But as far as reviews go, with the net and all, I don't see how many of these magazines can stay afloat.
I remember in the 90's you could get egm 1, and egm 2. They were almost 500 pages each. You could get 1000 pages of pure gaming goodness in the mail each month. Sadly, printed media is suffering.
It is sad to see a publication from the good old days go, but as has been said, it was inevitable really. Unfortunately, the Internet does have that effect on magazines. I guess console-specific magazines do OK (with demo discs etc.) but when you try to cover all fields, it is hard to give 'perks'. That, and most consoles can offer demo downloads now! RIP EGM.
Who's going to pay for articles that are available on the Web for free? Gamespot? Really? I don't read their stuff when it's free, let alone paying for it!!
what upsets me about it, is that The internet changes All the time. When its printed on a piece of paper you can always just go back to it and re read. When There were hurricanes like every week here in Florida the power was always out and thats what I did most the time was just re read old Game magazines.
That sucks. I guess it's just Game Informer. They pass on my book. EGM was alright, but I hated them during the time in my life all I had was an N64 and they almost always dissed the system and worshiped the PSX.
Those were the days. Think I have all the EGM 2's along with quite a few years worth of EGM. Once EGM 2 became Expert Gamer, I kinda of lost interest, since it was just codes and strategies more aimed at younger kids. Kind of a weird feeling knowing they'll be gone. I'm sure most western gamers from the 90's have at least a little nostalgic attachment to it.
Oh man, first I heard of this. I stay away from teh intertubes for one day and all hell breaks loose. At one time, I had every single issue of EGM (and all of EGM 2) up till number 200. I've still got a bunch from the early 90s somewhere, and all of them from 2000 - 2005 then stopped buying them. Such a shame Now that it's gone, somebody has to start the online EGM library. Make all the issues into downloadable PDFs.
EGM was cool...I like most of the old game mags...around when the DC hit some of them started to suck. Gamers Republic is still my favorite. EGM if I remember were dicks to the Saturn as well.
It's a shame western game mags can't go bi-weekly like Famitsu (or is that weekly?) They seem to be doing very well with up to date features that even the net doesn't have. how many times have we seen scans from that magazine used for net articles? Yakumo
Gamefan was my all time favorite magazine. EGM a close 2nd. EGM had been dying a slow death since 2000. It's hayday was the N64 era.
I remember that too, that use to always annoy me. In retrospect this might sound crazy but there were a lot more games I liked on 64 then psx, in fact psx hasn't really aged well for me. My favorite era of egm was definitely the 16bit days. You really did get your moneys worth and they covered so much. The 64/psx era was probably it's peak. The last great issue they had was probably their japan special. I remember when they decided to do an overhual of the magazine and asked subscribers to do a survey, and you got a $2 bill. That was pretty sweet. I still have that bill too.
