Don't knock PAL! It'll kick NTSC's ass any day, with its quality 1960s technology compared to your... 1950s technology. And 50Hz video is much better for telecine (film conversion)!

Only problem is Japan don't use PAL... and they use 60Hz - damn them and their DIFFERENT NUMBERS!

look around, if you are really into video encoding, you should know that once you are ntsc you can do anything, go to pal and crap, but once is pal, is shit and you cant even go to ntsc without fucking everything up

What? That last sentence made no sense.

Films are filmed on film at 24fps - I really can't see how that's NTSC!

With telecine for PAL all you need to do is to speed it up to 25fps, then you have proper progressive frames for each original film frame. Sure things may be a bit too fast, but you never really notice the 4% speed-up (unless it's like some song you heard a million times before).

However with telecine for NTSC, it first is slightly slowed down to 23.976 fps, but the part you forgot to mention - a "3:2 pulldown" conversion has to be applied on it to make it 59.94 field-per-second video. This means that with the original film frames, every odd frame lasts for 3 TV fields and every even frame lasts for 2 TV fields - this leads to a lack of smoothness in motion. Also, it is a pain in the ass to convert 59.94Hz interlaced video back to 23.976 progressive (for use on PCs or whatever), whereas with PAL it's always progressive.

I know 23.976fps is a standard framerate for DVD video, but the player will still have to do the 3:2 pulldown crap to output it to a TV.

    I really don't see how that's better...

And there's also the fact that 50Hz PAL has a higher resolution (576 lines vs. 480), and PAL colour is less erroneous than NTSC - we don't need any tint control!

Yeah, but - to be really really anal - HDTV isn't NTSC at all because it's all transmitted digitally.

correction, so movies are filmed in 24p.... mmm thats just damn ntsc with 3:2 pulldown, wanna bitch about the .24? oh well, why cant we all just use rgb? :smt043 and about the extra resolution on pal, why do you need it? the tv doesnt even support that resolution :smt067

edit: hell yeah, pal is german! it rulz, it would be da bomb if it was 24fps tho.... and why are videogames 60fps if tv is 24fps....?

Evan -01 Just admit that NTSC is shite for anything bar games. I know because I was born and lived in the UK for 23 years before I moved to Japan and I can tell you that the picture quality on Japanese TV is no where near as good as standard PAL TV. Reds have that shitty AV look to them with fuzzy bits around the outter image, the colours don't look as nice plus you CAN see the scan lines without actually having to try. There are all sorts of other downders as far as picture quality is concerned with NTSC such as angled lines looking jaggy.
