Okay so I was sent a famicom disk system to look at and try to calibrate for someone. I also purchased a famicom and famicom disk system from japan but that will not be here until 12th-30th of the month. I started to look at the one I sent to calibrate and even after cleaning the system out and adjusting the center hub screw it still gives error 22.

I have been reading various guides and watching videos but nothing seems to get the disk to read properly. I only have one disk so maybe it is just the disk I have is the issue. Supposed to get 11 more disks around same time as I get my systems.

I wonder if the disks are bad or if something is wrong with the drive heads.

Is possible to replace the heads? I think they're 3 inch drives though and not the standard 3.5 inch drives. I'm not sure if the heads from a 3.5 inch drive would work or even fit in the drive.

I don't think they are the same. What I will most likely do is compare the one I was sent to the one I get from Japan and see if I find anything wrong between the two. Like maybe a missing washer, or striped screw, etc. When I have something to compare with might make it easier to figure out the issue.

FDS is different to floppy's, they are called quick disks (a competitor to floppies in the 90's)..

Yup those are Luke's videos watched that also, also foudn this video from RetroRaiderJapan that gives details about it. The guy that mailed me his system has done work to it before and said something about had to use a new screw on it. Wondering if that is the issue but won't know till I have something to directly compare with

Hopefully you can get this fixed. If only Nintendo used standard parts...

Me neither. I've talked about this on the forums before but my first eBay auction win was an untested Sega CD Model 1. After it came in the mail, it turned out to be dead. I replaced the fuse and it's alive once more. My original Xbox's DVD Drive's laser is dead and I don't have a replacement laser for it. I was told on hear to get a new drive but the recommended drive is rare.

A broken game console is one of the things I don't like seeing.

The first thing I would look at is the head position adjustment - when the drives come from Nintendo, they have some locking compound on the screw - if it's still there, it's good. If not, then it's quite likely that someone tried to adjust the head position to compensate for a misaligned drive hub - and once you put the hub back into the right position it leaves the head completely off track. The easiest way to get it in the right ballpark if you have another drive that works is by measuring the distance between the spindle and the center of the read head when the head is in the home position on the good drive and then adjusting the bad drive to the same value.

After this, you can just adjust for best read quality - although if you have a scope then scoping the playback signal and adjusting for maximum read amplitude is quicker and easier.

I thought I could use the one I am getting as a comparison so that I will be doing for sure, I do not own any scopes yet maybe in the future. I hope he didn't do some damage and will have to replace parts
