I wonder if there is an adapter that converts old Japanese RF signals to American RF or composite rather than opening the machine. Has such a thing ever been created? I know the Famicom can be av modded, but I'd like to know if other options exist.
Yeah - get an old VCR with a cable tuner in it. The Japanese TV channels 1-3 map to cable channels 95-97
Check controller two and make sure the mic is turned off, that might help the buzzing. As for you getting a cleaner picture through rf you would need a jpn tv,just av mod it,its a simple install.
You shouldn't get any buzzing - the sound subcarrier is in the same place in NTSC-J and cable systems (4.5MHz) - although in my experience the actual setting of the RF modulator in a Famicom is not very accurate. Depending on the cable tuner, you might also need to put a attenuator between the modulator and the RF input. I used to use a "cable ready" VCR with my PC-Engine, and the results were good (well, about as good as you can expect from RF, anyway).
I want to get a famicom but what hold me is that rf because is very difficult to find a crt tv that works fine and they do not work with lcd tv. The same happen to me with the Sega SG-1000 I cant play it because of that and I want to make the AV mod I know where to get the video but I dont know where to get the audio on the pcb. I even got a Hori twin booster rf to see if it works but no.
In the past I have used a straight coax cable and turned the TV up to a high enough channel and that always worked for me. However RF is seriously godawful... If you can help it at all, or have the necessary skills, AV mod it! Not too hard to get a little composite jack coming out of the system, better video quality, no fussing with channels
