Well, this week sees the 900th edition of Famitsu Japanese weekly game mag or maybe better known as the EGM of Japan (Full of shit but good for pictures  ) Anyway, in the special 900th edition they gave away a DVD featuring a few special game play videos and a few clips of new games including the Metal Gear 4 promo but apart from that it was full of crap. Also there's the Famitsu top 100 games booklet. No surprise to see that most of the games mentioned are RPGs or Adventures but do you really agree with their top 100? For example Sonic is number 49 while Sonic 2 was 150 !! That didn't even make it in to the top 100 yet it's a far better game than Sonic 1. Anyway, here is the top 20. What do you think? KEY: SFC - Super Famicom (SNES) PCE - PC Engine (Turbo Graphix) FC - Famicom (NES) SS - Sega Saturn PSX - PlayStation PS2 - PlayStation 2 DC - Dreamcast N64 - Nintendo 64 20 - SFC - Street Fighter II 19 - PS2 - Kingdom Hearts 18 - DC - Sakura Taisen 3 17 - FC - Dragon Quest II 16 - PSX - Xeno Gears 15 - SFC - Final Fantasy V 14 - FC - Dragon Quest IV 13 - SS - Sakura Taisen 12 - PCE - Tengai Makyou Maru 11 - SFC - Dragon Quest V 10 - N64 - Zelda Oricana of Time 09 - PSX - Dragon Quest VII 08 - FC - Final Fantasy III 07 - SFC - Tactics Ogre 06 - SFC - Final Fantasy IV 05 - SS - Machi (they have got to be joking here !!!!) 04 - PS2 - Dragon Quest VIII 03 - FC - Dragon Quest III 02 - PSX - Final Fantasy VII 01 - PS2 - Final Fantasy X If you ask me that top 20 is written buy a true biased RPG fanatic. I mean bloody Dragon Quest listed 6 times and Final Fantasy listed 5 times. Truly a bit of Square / Enix arse kissing going on there. Oh, and Sega Saturn Machi at 5 ??? I could name at least 20 games far more lasting and enjoyable on the Saturn than Machi ! To me every time someone makes a top games chart it's always filled with the games that publishes spent a lot on promoting. Very odd. Yakumo
Far, Far too RPG Based. I mean it only has 1 of the 5 40/40 games in! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famitsu)
That's what I mean, the top 20 alone consists of more Square / Enix games than anything else. Something is not right with that. Yakumo
Its the top 100 for this generation of gamers who see ff7 an "old school" rpg. Thats why FFX was listed as the bast.. That or EGM's editor in chief took over Famitsu
From a Japanese point of view, yes. Western, no. The Japanese geek who is isolated from society values the simulated social interaction of a RPG. The Sakura Tiasen games were excellent, practically a crime they did not make it here.
The only game in that top 20 opf the top 100 that isn't a RPG is Street Fighter 2 on the SFC. Very sad I think. Yeah, RPGs last ages but how many times can you replay a RPG? Not that many. Well, Shenmue maybe but that's only because of the FREE system. Yakumo
Hmm, If I was making my top list of best games ever - it would nearly all my RPG for me. They just stick with you far longer than any other game. Of course I would have to stick a shooter and fighter in there, but 80 percent would be RPGs. But I do think ranking RPGs is nearly always a mistake, as they are just such a subjective experience. I do agree with a lot of the games on that top 20 (not in that order) but I would have placed RPGs like Chrono Cross, FFVI, BOF III, SO2, Suikoden 2 (I could go on, and on) instead of the DQ games. I just have never rated any DQ that highly. Oh well, this is just like when they did the top 100 famicom games - that was bloody awful! (as for replaying RPG, oddly enough I almost always play an (good) RPG twice - once on my own for a quick fun finish. Then again with some sort of guide getting all the secrets etc) And the number one. That is plain wrong.
Zelda isn't really an RPG - it has a few RPG elements but is far more of a action/adventure/"anything that doesnt fit into another category" game This list is worth no more than the crappy "teh bestest games evar" lists on amazon, its completely pants. Perhaps good for an RPG fan, but not all of the world (or indeed, all of japan) like RPG's...I've not played through 18 of the 20 games on there...
Ugh... horrible list. No Mario games? No Pac-man? No Space Invaders or 2D Zeldas? And I agree with you 100% that Sonic 2 should be up there and listed above the original Sonic.
I guess, the list is all relative. I like my rpgs as much as the next person, well maybe more. I for sure thought Final Fantasy 1 and DragonQuest 1 would be on the 1-20 list as they are truely classics. I'm glad SF2 at least made the top 20. I guess all the games you love growing up just don't stand the test of time when you go back to them today compared to whats out there like Final Fantasy X. 3-D has definately killed off the side scroller genere, granted I have not tried the new final fight game that just came out, but I'm pretty sure it will be related only in namesake. after all the contra remakes(some where actually decent) on the new systems over the years, I'm not sure if I really want to see a game like bionic commando redone. I wouldn't want to play the classic for more then 10 minutes either, it's stange I guess.. the games are our memories of our child hood and thats what makes them great or #1 on our list.
FFX top game of all time? And I thought the Japanese were hardcore. I disagree with most "top games of all time" lists all the time, anyway. I think either Gamespot, IGN, or both think Chrono Cross is the best game of all time when I found it to be pure, utter, boring, shit.
If that's not blasphemy, I don't know what is ;P *edit* I didn't see the Cross, I thought you ment Trigger.. still chrono cross was all right.
My first reaction when skimming over it: "That doesn't look too unreasonable" My second reaction after actualy looking over all the names and their ranks: "I don't trust Japanese gamers anymore"
Yeah, if you liked having 100 characters with about one paragraph of backstory each. And the fact that it wasnt really related nor did it resemble Chrono Trigger in any fashion. Yes, old Chrono characters were in but boy, what a crappy way of doing it and what a freakin lame last boss.
