On You Tube and Destructoid I'm getting jumped at on all angles because I said the New Mega Man Unlmited fan game was a steaming pile of shit with Poor Level design. Citiing a few examples of why the game is a steaming pile of shit. Answering ranging from "You do better" to "HOW DARE YOU CALL A LABOR OF LOVE SHIT" have been bombarding me. But the game sucks. Poor check point placement inconsistent and sometimes unfair level design plague this game yet some people are calling it Mega Man 11. If Somebody at Capcom made this game, it wouldn't be allowed to be released. So I wrote a blog on Destructoid explaining Level Design in Mega Man, and of course they ignore it and only jump on the fact I called the game a pile of shit. A good Mega Man game should never throw obstacles at you out of now where it should build to them. That's the key too a good Mega Man Game and that's something Mega Man Games don't do. That said I have played a Ton of Sonic and Mega Man Rom hacks and fangames. The Only decent Mega Man Rom hacks I've played have been the endless runs. Whoever made those get it. The actual from scratch fangames all follow the "Make it hard as balls formula. Meenwhile Sonic Rom hacks and fangames are Actually really good. Sonic Before the Sequel and After the Sequel aren't perfect but they at least get the basic idea of what a Sonic game should be and they have amazing soundtracks as well. The Unity made Sonic Fan Made remix is gorgeous and even looks better than Sonic 4 does. Dare I even say Sonic fans get what a Sonic game should be more than Sega does? It's two Extremes You have Mega Man fans that don't get Mega Man and Sonic fans that might actually get Sonic better than Sega does. Interesting phenomenon. OH and lets not forget Streets of Rage Remake which was so good Sega released a C&D because of it. Anywho toss more examples at me, Fangames from any series good or bad. Do we like em, or do we hate them?
Ohhhhh man, basically that's fanboy rage. Even if the game is good or bad depending on your opinion, they'll possibly burn your ehouse down.
I'll throw my two cents in and add that Sonic Robo Blast 2 & Neo Sonic series are the Best Fan games made directly from scratch & came out really excellent, definitely worth a playthrough!! as for the My Little Pony Final Fanasty 6 rom hack "cringe" smfdh! just plain stupid imo.
Maybe you should have led with the blog post and not calling it shit. I don't really play too many fangames. My buddy turned me on to Megaman 8-bit death match, which is fun for what it is. I would only play multiplayer though. If we expand the definition of fangame slightly from what you are talking about, There's a lot of excellent doujinshi out there that's been based on anime, like Watanabe Seisakujo's Queen of Heart games. Kenta Cho's rRootage http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/rr_e.html is a lovely ode to boss battles in many different shmup styles (pysvariar, gigawing, ikaruga, and maybe another, I forget...) If there are any good NES hacks/fangames let me know and I'll try them out.
Well it's not like I called the game shit to be obscene that's exactly what I called it while playing it. Mega Man 8 Bit death match is REALLY GOOD too. So is Rockman 7 FC and Rockman 8 FC great 8bit demakes of well Mega Man 8 and 7 Yep
lol... You have to be careful around fanboys... Oh! I can't believe I forgot the greatest fangame of all: Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden: Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa http://www.talesofgames.com/related_game/barkley-shut-up-jam-gaiden/ Don't get left out. Finish this one now before Chapter 2 comes out!
In the realm of opinions, harsh words beget harsh words. I agree with your view on the Mega Man fan game, but maybe a better choice of words wouldn't have inflamed them?
Well yeah but like I said those are the exact words that came from my mouth as I played the game. It's not me exaggerating or sensationalizing anything at all. It's one thing to be upset that I called a game somebody liked shit, to ignore my examples of how to improve using actual examples from Mega Man Games is another thing all together. I used Hornet Man's stage as an Example of building up and presenting things that will be in the stage later.
Oh my God, I fucking hate when people say "you do better"; the burden of improvement should not be placed on the critic. That aside, I appreciate the effort put into Megaman Unlimited; it's so much more solid than Street Fighter x Megaman. However, I really wish more people would try a MM style different from the NES titles, or even an original style. (I would LOVE it if somebody did a competent MM fangame in the style of MM8 or MMX4-6).
Meh. I take no opinion on this stuff. I've found having an opinion leads exactly to what's being discussed here. Therefore I keep shit to myself to save me from the trouble. God knows I've had enough smartass replies to my opinions...
I found Mega Man Unlmited to be a bit too unfair like dying never felt like my fault but a flaw in the game's overall design. The Checkpoints were placed weirdly too and that whole OH lets make the final boss an unbeatable Zero is just UGH. Street Fighter X Mega Man was maybe too easy but I think it was solid it maybe played things a bit too safe but over all I think it was a good effort.
You should do a short video review showing your points. You may get flamed on youtube but if its funny you'll get tons of hits.
I considered it. But I'd rather have a hot nail shoved down my wang hole than deal with Fanboys and subject myself to playing the game again.
My favorites are on videos showing off diesel power. Some idiot who drives a Prius gets on and spats off about how harmful the black smoke is when in reality it's cleaner that the fumes coming from a gas engine exhaust. Gotta love those idiots...
