I've over the last few weeks been playing every version of Outrun available. The Saturn Version arrived in my mailbox today from my friends at Play Import and I've been playing the shit out of it the arranged tracks and varying options not in the other versions have me leaning towards this version. But other versions have their merits too.

So I'm going to take a poll, what's your favorite version of outrun?

For pure arcade it has to be the Dreamcast version because it's on a Sega Console. The Xbox version is just the same though. The Saturn version while very close to th arcade still isn't perfect although the arangements make it a fantastic version.

The Saturn Version also has Japanese/Overseas courses which I'm not sure if the Dreamcast version has.

Mega drive isn't perfect but it does have an extra song or two if I remember right.

OutRun 2 of course. It's just perfect.

Despite technically better versions appearing later, I voted Saturn because this was the first console where I didn't really notice any significant graphical compromises while playing... and the remixed music also makes for a fantastic standalone album!

Does the version of Outrun in Shenmue 2 run at 240p, or is it scaled like Hang On in the first Shenmue? What about After Burner II for that matter? I've played them before, but I can't remember.

Hmm. A quick search suggests to me Microsoft didn't bother including 240p in the Xbox SDK.

how can you tell? I have Game Works and will give it a run in my DC however no matter what game I play my TV always says 480p for DC stuff.

It's hard to tell unless you're using a CRT. On a CRT you can instantly tell just by looking closely at the screen, because it's not interlaced. I think the resolutions do vary slightly, but if the image isn't interlaced (and you're not using an HD CRT), then you can bet its 240p or pretty close. I know that Space Harrier in Shenmue runs at 240p, while Hang On runs at 480i (or 480p if you're using a VGA cable). I'm guessing a DC won't output 240p over a VGA cable, since most monitors don't support that resolution.

Is there a way to play those games in Shenmue II without actually going to the arcade? I plan on playing Shenmue II at some point in the near future, but not right now.

The Xbox version has stand-alone rips if that's what you're looking for... :subdued:

I just tried the PS2 remake of Outrun and it wasn't that bad.
Looked like some cleaned up version of what COULD'VE been a Saturn remake, pretty neat.
The only thing lacking was the drifting which is present in Outrun 2... so it's something inbetween 1 & 2.

Best one for me would be 2 on the Xbox, I love the handling (although most fellow racing friends I recommended this game to didn't like it, but did like Burnout for instance...). I never could play the originals for a long while, as it's a bit too tedious for me (crashing into billboard most of the time and whatnot).

I really like the PCE version.

Not really sure why, think it might be because I spent a lot of time with it on my GP32 back in the day.

My favorite is probably the Saturn version, love the arranged tracks. Didn't they change the car in the Xbox version to look less like a Testarossa?

...which would be really strange as they had an official license for once.

It would be rather weird actually, now that you mentioned it.

Saturn version for me is one of my favourites, I love the original arcade game and that's the closest thing I own to it :)

Inspired by this thread, I played about 2 hours of Outrun on XBLA last night. Thank you GoH for the inspiration. :]
