Hey, Assemblers. I don't remember a ton about the PS1 games, but I remember thinking they were really unique and fun. How the developers got around the long load times in the second game was hilariously genius too. I remember development had been quiet on Inferno until we got word that the game was put "on hold." It was an obvious nail in the coffin. I know some cutscenes surfaced on YouTube, but what I've always wanted to see is some quality gameplay footage. So, what do we know about the game?
Well the videos that are on youtube are indeed from a beta build of the game. Talked to said person a few times and got some exclusive images and gameplay videos, but they have no plans on releasing the beta.
Sorry everyone, I know it has taken me a while to get back to this topic, but, ajrich, you have non-cutscene gameplay footage? I've always wanted to at least see how the game would have played. What are the chances of the gameplay footage becoming available? It's a shame the beta won't ever be released. That one's high on my Holy Grail list. UPDATE: It looks like this game has come up a few times on the forums, and Assembler himself doesn't seem to believe the game exists anymore: I'm not sure where that leaves Morishima, the YouTube user with all those cutscene videos. Either way, it's definitely a shame if the game truly doesn't even have a build floating around. The more screen shots that get unearthed, the more interesting it becomes. I'm sure everyone's moved on, but, for me, it's a big missing piece of PS2 history.
Well, then, I hope fans and enthusiasts alike get the chance to play it someday. Thank you for giving me hope, Borman.
Assembler is incredibly wrong, and I gave my word I wouldn't show the gameplay video that was shown to me publicly. But they vastly expanded on gunplay, you could fire 2 different guns at once mapped to different buttons. Animations were incredibly smooth, graphics were incredibly good for a ps2 game just missing some polish in some areas. Honestly I think Eidos were incredibly foolish in cancelling this and releasing tomb raider aod. Rest assured a build survives out there and has more than likely been backed up. Always the chance a build will leak out one day, hopefully someone does it to keep this series alive for the fans.
I respect that. I'm a bit emotional thinking it's still out there; After reading Assembler's post, I thought there was no chance of ever seeing it. Thank you, Borman and ajrich, for giving me hope that we'll get to play it someday.
Not a problem, I grew up playing the FE series and hated Eidos for awhile after they cancelled the third game. I have no doubt in my mind we'll get to play the game one day
Thanks you, Ajrich. You sound pretty confident we'll get a chance to play it someday; I'll hang onto that. At least I learned a few things about the game during my research. For example, according to the YouTube videos, the last known build was dated April 16, 2003! The game must have been in development for about two years, which speaks for Kronos' dedication.
Thanks again, Ajrich. I hope that's sooner rather than later, but I'm sure it'll be a long time before the game sees the light of day. This thread has given me some much needed hope, though. Before anyone brings it up, yes, I've heard of Fear Effect: Sedna, and, no, I'm not expecting it to be good. Like many works, I believe Fear Effect could have only existed in the point in time in which it was created. I don't expect a new developer and today's development trends to mix into a faithful entry in the series. I'll be keeping a distant eye on it, though.
I was excited to see Fear Effect: Sedna at first from the title but it doesn't look to be at all like the other Fear Effect games unfortunately. Although I do respect what Square Enix seems to be doing, which is allowing indie devs to use their not-in-use IPs if they can get SE's approval and gain the needed capital. Really would lave loved Inferno though :c
As well as another previously unknown prototype. Seeing how far along Inferno was, perhaps the prototype is the beginning of a sequel - Fear Effect 4. That is the only thing that makes sense to me. Why would Square Enix give them access to a prototype that would not be related to the game they were making? My guess is they are remaking Fear Effect 4 as Fear Effect: Sedna.
The plot thickens... This will also make my imaginary OCD fire off like mad. If I remember correctly, Fear Effect 2 takes place before Fear Effect, and now we're getting Sedna as Fear Effect 4 which is a sequel to the unreleased Fear Effect 3?! Gah.
This fansite has plenty of screenshots, artworks and even parts of the script for the game Also, some 3D models, not sure whether the ps1 ones were ripped and the Inferno ones were fanmade. http://turningpointweb.com/modeles-3d/#hanagownfe3 EDIT: http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=19851.0 " Hi Mark ! Thank you very much. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work, however, I've found an old version of biofat and managed to rip the WAD files from both games, but not from Inferno. I was wondering if you could help me find a way to rip the models from the PS2 WAD files of Inferno, I do have some and If you are okay I could send you one, I would really like to rip them. I've been searching on the web during months but I didn't find anything. That's why I'm asking to you. Regards."
Wow, within six months of creating this topic, some Fear Effect news has actually surfaced! So weird. Just to be clear, Pato's Eurogamer article contains spoilers of Inferno's ending. Personally, I don't think it matters much, since Fear Effect isn't really about its endings, but others may feel differently. I also want to give some extra attention to Pato's other link: Turning Point Web. Their Fear Effect Inferno section has some in-game shots I haven't seen elsewhere. They even have some shots of the fully-3D environments from the game! That's so interesting, though. The near-final build of Inferno still exists, and Sushee got to play it along with an "old prototype." This is a weird situation, though. Inferno's canon, but it sounds like there isn't a budget for making it accessible to fans. (Porting an unfinished PS2 game to the PC is probably far outside Square-Enix's plans with Fear Effect.) I wonder if they'll pull a Kingdom Hearts ReMiX and make a "movie" out of the cut-scenes. This news has only gotten me more curious about the Inferno builds, though. I know; I'm more concerned about Inferno's future than Sedna's.
