For real this was one of the most expectantly hyped games before the N64 came out, Square scrapped it for FFVII.

There are plenty of screens & info about it in Gamefan mags.

  3. Right. I distinctly remember seeing about half of these shots in the old Game Players mag around the time this would have been in development. Unfortunately I don't have anything from that period anymore :smt022

I had a FF7 promotional video, I believe it had a crappy clip of that 64 demo with the FF6 characters :D I'm pretty sure that they got farther than that though.

its real, and made by square. it was a demo , but it wasn't made with real n64 hardware. if i remember well (i hope so), it was made by a program with ''silicon'' in his name (that's accurate!). like i said earlier , it wasn't a game planned by square, it was only a demo of what the n64 was suposed ( i supose) to be able of. Alot of people says there's prototype of it , or that it was really suposed to be on n64, but it wasn't.

enjoy the pictures, there's not alot of them (sadly).

That specific demo was completely conceptual but I'm pretty sure Square started something more on real hardware, I think they released some pics of that too, I recall something similar to Quest.

That was awesome! Maybe Square or whoever *was* in charge of it could finish it, and make it one of the next gen handheld games!

  11. Lest anyone get excited, it was, indeed, a tech demo created exclusively on Silicon Graphics hardware (so you could say it was close to the N64) when Square was looking into developing games for the next generation of hardware; it was never playable code on the Nintendo 64.

I'm rather interested in finding out how many of these tech demos were produced - I actually have a different video than the one linked above, that features Locke, Terra (?), and Shadow fighting a large rock-monster thing, to the boss battle music of FFVI.

Like Kyuusaku mentioned, I also think there was work done on a Nintendo 64 Final Fantasy - in fact, I've heard from several places that the ultra-blocky characters on FFVII are leftovers from a scrapped N64 project.

    Very interesting... :smt033

I wonder how much a playable proto cart of this would be worth? :smt030

Edit: If such a thing exists...

You wouldn't imagine some of the stuff Japanese Square collectors have. Things that come to my mind are the playable FC Final Fantasy IV and FDS Seiken Densetsu! :prayer:

Sealed Final Fantasy VII for PSX is a few hundred bucks... strange, considering you can get it used for 500 - 1000 yen just about anywhere.

You're joking, right? I know I posted an ebay auction of one for something like $300.00 a while back but I never thought one sold for that. Some people are idiots.

    Possibly the Ultra 64 board?
Since it was maybe planned to be ported on N64, that could be a logical consequence.....

Oh, i remember that video, i downloaded it way back before the N64 was released :smt043 , i just finished FFIII a few weeks before at the time (- us import, couldn't even see the whole ending because the screen got all black - maybe because of the adapter?) and was anxiously waiting for a new one...
my FF-dependece was at its maximum during that period :-D
Btw, the fact that it says "Final Fantasy VI" could mean that originally maybe only a port was planned....although the music is the one used afterwards in FFVII if i remember correctly

I'm more interested in the SNES version of FF7. Not sure how far they got but it definitely exists.
The music guy(Nobou something maybe??) mentioned in an interview not to long ago.

  19. I'm not sure if Square ever even considered FFVII on the SNES, actually - I think FFVII came around after they stopped supporting it, and I don't think it was announced for anything other than the PSX. I know there has been some speculation that they started it on the N64, but this is the first I've heard on the SNES...

ther are screenshots on the net of VII for the snes but they';re just mockups done by a magazine at the time. square only looked into that briefly.

although 64 was a silicon graphics tech demo it was intende for eventual porting to 64. however, as the 64 hardware had not yet been finalised they just knocked out a tech demo with characters from VI whom they obviously wouldnt have used in a full ff 64 game.

i also heard rumours that they started a full ff game on proper 64 hardware when the u64 dev kits first went out, however i have never seen this substansiated anywhere and as the timeframe for FFVII's development meant that they wouldve started just after the U64 hardware was sent to developers i doubt they got as far as anything really playable. however they may have used textures and polygon models as someone suggested above.
