http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-08-26-ffxiv-limits-xp-earning-after-eight-hours Apparently, FFXIV will lower the XP and Skill Points you can earn after 8hrs of play a week, then after another 7hrs it might not give you any at all. This is to prevent casual gamers from feeling left out.
Preventing abuse of online RPGs is a surprising step, I would've thought developers are evil enough to exploit the addiction value of these games for a little longer.
While this does seem like a "Go and have a life!" idea, there's also the notion of people not being able to level up as quickly, and thus having to keep those month subscriptions for a much longer time if they want to see anything in the game.* * - I do not play MMOs, but I assume there are those that don't care much about teh mad l00tz and drop off after hitting the max level. Unless FFXIV is free, I could certainly see this move as a ploy to squeeze more money out of those folks. It also gives Squeenix more time to push out new content for high level players.
woot? ive played eve for almost 2 years being a pirate in lowsec and have never "grinded" anthing in that game. the corp i was in had 2 days of fleet action in the week nothing more. if you go mining though.... thats pretty boring XD
The only thing I'm curious about is since they're effectively limiting how much you can play will they be making the subscription cost cheaper? I know WoW is like $15/mo and FFXI was like $12/mo when I played. Maybe with this FFXIV can be like $8/mo? FFXI was the only MMO I've enjoyed, so hopefully this doesn't ruin XIV for me.
MMO addiction is way different that vg addiction, is actually a lot like what happens to D&D addicts, and its getting out of hand.
That'll teach you for not avoiding them full stop. IMHO it (loosely) is one of the causes of Japan's deflation. Why try to go out and fuck real women when you can get your Elf up to level 8! Could be account-unique.
Someone said that this game is hard to get through without switching to other characters from time to time. Meaning, switching to another class (and effectively resetting your time limit) is recommended. Anyhow, I see the restriction as good news. People need to get off their ass and do something else or change their character class.
Believe me, if I could avoid them then I would. you should write an article for metropolis on how to solve Japan's problems...
Haha. I know a few contributors, but they're mainly into the nightlife side. That's the end. The means is what they lack, due to 2 problems. 1) The aforementioned "detachment from society" which is not unique to Japan, and 2) Absolutely fucking ridiculous cost involved with having offspring here. Any article I write would probably be consider as Japan-hate, and not be published. It would also suck and need heavy editing as I'm no writer. Long story short, and not to derail, I think all of their plans to get people fornicating again will only bring them up to scratch. This whole gadget-centric society has to be overcome somehow. Every time I go out to a bar/club people are spending more time on their fucking phones than trying to pull. Disgraceful. Most people aren't even doing drugs anymore. What a boring world we're creating. I'd like to think Square has humankind's best interest at heart, but it seems more of a way to curb the "burnout factor" which is an important element of such games, and in the end is probably more welcome than simply making leveling such a grind.
I'm against this for the simple fact that I don't need a game company to nanny me because they think it's in my best interest. I really thought that more people here would have the same reasoning.
anyone know if this game will be any good? personally, I'm waiting for The Old Republic. I'm kinda worried about balancing issues in that game though... I mean, c'mon, what's class is going to be as good as a Jedi or Sith??
We'll find out tonight the open beta starts at 7PM Pacific time zone. I'm just hoping my computer can handle it. The site says the minimum is a Geforce 9600, but I have a pretty beefy and overclocked Geforce 7900 GTO, and my CPU specs is a ways above the minimum.
