This is beyond pathetic. Final Fantasy XIII was ass, but at least it was an actual game where you do actual things. What the hell is this?

For those that can't watch the video or are allergic to anything IGN, I'll explain. Final Fantasy: All The Bravest is a $4 iOS "game" where the objective is to fight enemies using a party of up to 30 characters. There is no strategy, no tactics, and no variety. Each class attacks a monster at random, and that's pretty much it. You fight by either tapping each character, or waving your finger up and down like so:

Fun right? The characters are generic classes. Fighter, white mage, geomancer, etc. You unlock unique premium characters from the Final Fantasy saga by giving Squeenix $1 for each character, 35 total. And the character's are given at random. Want Cecil? Too bad, you get Squall. Still want Cecil? Try again for $1. Maybe you'll get lucky.

So after losing a battle for no other reason than the game sucks and lacks strategy, all your party members are dead. You have to wait three minutes for a character to revive. 30 characters = 1 hour 30 minutes. Don't want to wait? Squeenix would be more than happy to let revive them all at once... for a fee.

There are lots of crappy game designed to rip you off through micro-transactions, but the fact that they're using Final Fantasy to do it is downright insulting. It's insulting to the series, it's insulting to the people who made the games, and worst of all, it's insulting to the fans.

    "But it's just a cell phone/tablet game!"

So what? That doesn't mean it gets a free pass for being a terrible game and a blatant, shameless attempt at a cash grab.

    "But it's only $4!"

This game isn't worth $1. It uses that same damn graphics we've seen since the Final Fantasy 1 remake. Hardly any effort went into this.

"Nobody is forcing you to pay for the unique characters!"

So then what was the point of this game again? A "fan-service" game where you play as 30 generic nobodies?

"Nobody is forcing you to pay to get revived!"

Good point. Enjoy waiting 90 minutes to have your generic characters back.

"Nobody is forcing you to buy this game!"

Nobody is forcing you to read this thread.

Oh please like they've never made a garbage FF based game before. *cough* Chocobo Racing *cough*

Well, that's. Hmm. I don't even know if I'd call it interesting.

This is more than simply a bad video game. It's a blatant attempt at milking the Final Fantasy IP for everything it's got through micro-transactions, lack of effort, and simple greed. They want our money and don't want to give a quality product in return. It couldn't be any more obvious. This is exactly why I hate micro-transactions (and phone games as well).

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I hate FF XIII. But at least that was an actual $60 video game with hours of content, however terrible it may or may not be. There was actual effort put into making and designing the game. Can't say the same for All the Bravest.

What's next, is Nintendo going to release an old school Super Mario game using SMB 1 graphics where all you do is tap the screen to jump while Mario moves by himself? Will we get pay actual money to unlock powerups? When we get a game over, is Nintendo going to be nice enough to let us pay for more lives so we don't have to start over?

EDIT: In other news, apparently even the people who wrote/translated the game knew it was terrible. The majority of the text and descriptions in the bestiary is full of puns, jokes, and other quirks. Because with a game this bad, who gives a shit. Here's the article: http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/01/hi...reason-to-play-final-fantasy-all-the-bravest/

    Some examples:

I actually love lighthearted localizations like this. I just wish it were in an actual Final Fantasy game.

If they wanted to make a game that's worse than E.T. then it's a huge success.

You think this is bad? For some reason the Japanese love shitty card games, you know like Top Trumps or for those younger, Yugio. I hate all this shit but hate it even more when done on a console or gaming device. Yep, the Japanese mobile game market is overrun with these shitty card games and yep, Square / Enix are there with Final Fantasy Art something or other. Plus there’s the crappy Final Fantasy Dimensions which is bloody expensive for a phone game. 3 times as much as other games.

I don't know what Top Trumps is, but I know Yu-Gi-Oh at least requires some amount of strategy. This game is literally waving your finger up and down at random and hoping you win.

I haven't played Dimensions, but from what I can tell it looks like a typical portable Final Fantasy using the same engine from I, II, and IV on the PSP. I might be interested in it, if it wasn't a phone game. Though I do have to admit I'm getting sick of seeing that engine. Whenever I see it I think - RPG Maker: Final Fantasy Edition.

YAMKC - Yet Another Mario Kart Clone. But yeah, it's not really a bad game.

I like PSP versions of I,II and IV more than III for DS, Android and PSP - I prefer clean and easy to see 2D to 3D with Quake 1 level of detail, when it comes to RPGs.

Dimensions, well haven't played it much but there's a few things, first - font is tiny, second - text sometimes becomes gibberish, only way to fix it is to minimize game and then run it again, controls well, just suck. And that's on device that listed as compatible. Well out of curiosity i tried to hack the protection and run it on my... well, android x86 dev board, which is basically a few parts of industrial PCs glued together, nothing like any standard screen resolution, running custom build of Android with two ARM emulation subsets, libhoudini and experimental one.
It worked just fine. Doesn't work properly on supported hardware, runs ok on a random piece of junk... Nice. So it's rushed game with bugs for quite high price. Same applies for Chrono Trigger, same insane DRM, no way to play it in a train or airplane or anywhere else without stable internet connection, so unless you crack it it will be PITA, same crappy controls.

Anyone who pays the insigne amount square ask for Chrono Trigger is nuts. Just use one of the two fantastic SFC/SNES emulators. Then you get a sensible file size and much better controls.

I do too. I was just saying that I'm sick of seeing the same engine and aesthetics used for each game. To me it has a very RPG Maker look, which is not something I expect from a Final Fantasy "remake".

They do that shit with mobile phone games too? Fuck that.

What? While it is pretty expensive, the controls for the non emulated version are far superior to any android emulators built in controls that I have used. Much much better, it actually becomes playable.

So its like what the Fez dev said? figures, after all I'm hearing the same stuff from other industries about japan.

Its the sole reason why sony is as fucked as it is now: they been playing it easy on the home market for years and now they cant compete on the international level, and economically speaking japan is fucked too.

Really? I thought FF XIII and XIII-2 were just "press A to win" with some pretty graphics. Don't remember an actual game there...

For me after the fusion of Square with enix, anything goes down. I switch to the Namco "Tales of" series and the old Squaresoft guys, Level 5 releases.
Final Fantasy without the old stuff like sakaguchi is what it is...
