So, you'll have to rebuy songs that you already own, because of the OST CDs, in order to hear them on your ipod? If thats the case, what a waste of money.
... if you've got the audio CD already, then why would you buy the MP3? You'd just rip them from CD to MP3 and copy them over to the iPod. Anyway, I can't see why people would buy MP3 albums at 99e per track when they could order the same album at probably half the price and get a real, tangible CD in a nice case.
Errr, no, you can just rip them from the CD's you own and put them on your iPod. If you don't have the CD's you can now download them - think of it like a new record shop opening and selling cds - If you own em, you obviously don't buy them, but if you want them, go buy them from either the old shops, or the new one....
In most cases, it's quicker and easier to pay/download INSTANTLY only the songs you want as opposed to buying the CD online and waiting. Impulse sales. Sometimes a particular CD may be hard to find or overly expensive. Given that not ever track on a CD is a winner, the iTunes model works out quite well. It has its purpose, but if you already own the CD, I agree....just convert to MP3 and copy to iPod.
I guess it comes down to personal preference. When I buy something, in most cases I'd like tangible proof that I had bought something. I'd never buy a game to download online either, I'd order it from an online shop or buy it in the street.
I'm largely the same way...buying something and getting an item in return is what I'm used to be it a CD in a case, a game with box and manual and so on. The majority of consumers don't seem to feel this way it seems.
Hmm... "majority" and legal MP3 downloads don't sit happily in a sentence together - the majority are still using P2P to get their MP3s. Kazaa has what, 5 million on at one time or something? Assuming they download 10 mp3's an hour (pretty conservative given the level of broadband connections today) that's 50 million per hour or 500 million in 10 hours. iTunes apparently recently broke the 400 million mark, so I'd say the consumers are still reasonably against the online MP3 model.
Err... for everyone that immediately jumped on the "You have to buy the MP3s of CDs you already own for your ipod?" train of thought, the initial point was that these tracks from Final Fantasy soundtracks - the majority of which were unreleased in the US - are legally available for purchase on iTunes, in the US. If you HAVE the cd, either imported or gained through more shady venues, then nothing is stopping you from ripping it to MP3 and uploading it to your icon. The whole point is that these unreleased tracks are now available for legal purchase from Squaresoft. Take it easy, it's not another one of those, "OMG!!! BIG CORPORATION TELLING ME WHUT 2 DO WIF MY MONEYS!!!!1111" situations. That being said, while I like the inclusion of The Black Mages I and II and the FFVII soundtrack (in my opinion one of the greatest videogame soundtracks of all ever), I would have liked to see some of the other collections, like Pray or even the Chrono Trigger OST (the best soundtrack of all ever). Nonetheless, I'm glad Square decided to put forth this effort to make these songs available for consumers outside of Japan, even if we don't nifty album art. However, if iTunes is still sticking with their $.99-a-song model, downloading some full albums - such as FFVII's 84 tracks - could be quite costly. Then again, I don't know what the price is, as I haven't used iTunes for a while as it ate processor cycles for breakfast.
It's usually .99c/ track, or 9.99 per album, but on the US store recently its been getting var more variable. The FF soundtracks are anywhere from $5.99 to $24.99. Then again, the $24.99 ones would be 3x CD's, so its a lot of music
Meh, most of those are just the OSVs/OSTs (i.e. music taken directly from the game) - I'd rather just download the NSF/SPC/PSF files instead. Yeah, I know emulation isn't perfect and I have to convert them myself if I want to play them on anything that isn't my PC, but if you own the games why should you pay money for soundtracks you technically already have? I'd actually pay money for any of the piano collections or any of the other albums played with real instruments. But like Alchy and SuperGrafx, I'd rather get real CDs off Amazon or CD Japan.
