Since I moved back to Australia and am retired I decided to try modding an Xbox 360 Jasper for my son that I picked up cheap because it has a dodgy DVD drive, bought all the parts, CR4 XL, JRP V2, QSB's etc. Followed the instructions for R-Jtag+ to the letter and I have it to the stage of booting to Xell, which it does but only when it wants to at times. The funny thing is when it's warmed up a little it will boot first time nearly every time, this morning 9/10, I have been over all the solder joints, tried different settings, I hear that some Jaspers can be very stubborn. And if it doesn't glitch on the first attempt it won't glitch at all that cycle, you have to press the power button and try again, but it will glitch in no more than 3 power cycles. As I see it I have three options: 1. Get it to freeboot and assemble it and see how it goes. (I'm a perfectionist though) 2. Buy another CR4 XL chip and try that, which is my least likely option. (Some people have reported that doing this fixed erratic boot times) 3. Remove the R-Jtag+ and do RGH2+. (Most people report boots in less than 5 glitches with the CR4 XL after not getting R-Jtag to work properly) Any suggestions? As a side note while in the U.S. I had a Jasper 360 modded with RGH1 and it booted first time every time, it was my pride and joy but I only had it for 3 days as our house was broken into and some rotten b@st@rd stole it among other non essential items like a laptop and LCD TV. So I got another one done with the original R-Jtag as it had the latest dash and it varies between 5 and 45 seconds boot time and on cold mornings it takes 30 - 45 seconds.
I can't vouch as i'm mostly only into JTAG/XDK and not RGH, however i believe RGH2 is a much better idea then R-JTAG, i know someone who suffered a similar problem using R-JTAG
My advise is to check your soldering and resolder it and try again. My last resort would be RGH2+. Have you tried different dip combinations ? All fats should use R-JTAG+, but RGH2+ installation is easier.
I have resoldered every joint and checked them all with my DMM and they all check out 100%, it makes no difference. Tried all dip settings, post resistors, capacitors, the funny thing is it will either boot to Xell on the first glitch or not at all, the log says it's glitching ok but in reality it's not. I am going to give RGH2+ a try to see what happens, it's an easy change as I only have to swap a few wires around and change two solder points on the mother board, I can easily change it back. On TX they say some Jasper's are just super stubborn. The good news is I am learning a lot about modding the 360.
If RGH2+ still acts weird, then you most probably have a defective CR4XL. If you need proper help, you need to start a thread on TX.
You know I might just get another CR4 XL and try it and see, I can see I will be doing more of these so even if it's not that, I will use it. Another poster on TX said they had problems with theirs and swapped it out and it booted fine. They have come down in price locally so I can pick one up on Monday.
RGH1 is the way to go if your original nand has a low enough dashboard but if not the RGH2 is ok but pales in comparison to the boot times. I haven't tried any R-Jtag so I can't comment on that.
Thanks for the advice my dash was pretty recent, too recent for RGH1, I have another CR4 XL on the way and will try that, if it doesn't fix it I will do the RGH2+ and see how that goes. It's funny it will either boot on the first glitch or not at all, if it doesn't it will try to glitch a few more times then the CR4 XL seems to think it's booted and stops trying. I could actually use it as it is, I would just have to cycle the power button a few times at most but will keep looking for a solution for now. I started a thread on TX and got the usual it's your soldering, wiring etc, no one seems to know about this problem.
I got tired of messing with it and went with RGH2+ which is ever so simple to wire up, I must say I am surprised at how well it works, it's not an instant booter for sure but all the horror stories about RGH2 taking hours to glitch don't apply in this case. It will glitch most of the time in less than 20 seconds, sometimes it takes around 45 seconds but never longer, it's actually as fast as my original R-Jtag Jasper that I had done professionally. I could spend hours I guess playing around with dip switches but its reliable and fairly fast now. I also have some RG-316 coax that I could try for the CPU-Rst cable as I just used the supplied blue wire. But hey if you can't wait half a minute then your are really impatient. I put the latest hacked dash on it and in the process of setting up the Hdd with Xexmenu / Dashlaunch / FSD. A few people on TX forum say that "some" Jaspers are just super stubborn on R-Jtag, I guess this was one of them, but all's well that ends well. Anyone thinking of RGH2+ with the new TX CR4 XL chip, go ahead I doubt you will be disappointed.
I have RGH1 on my Jasper, and it pretty much boots instantly. Sometimes it won't boot at all, but it's fairly good.
Yeah I had a RGH1 Jasper done and it was instaboot, but unfortunately I got it back on the Friday and we were broken into on the Monday and it was one of the things taken, I only had it for the weekend, boy I was peed off! I just bought a Jasper 512mb off Ebay and it's only on dash 14699 so once I dump the nand I will see if I can RGH1 that, it should be good if not it will be R-Jtag.
Update: My first attempt, the RGH2 Jasper 16mb is still going strong, my son is using it, it glitches between 2 & 5 cycles most of the time, sometimes it can take up to 9, he loves it. I did RGH1 on the Jasper 512mb I got off Ebay for $20.00 using a Coolrunner Rev C and it went smoothly, I had to adjust some wiring positions to get instaboots every time, I found the PLL_Bypass can't go under the Hana chip, I used grounded shielded RG-316 50 ohm coax over the fan shroud, now it instaboots. It was chock full of dust, I spent a couple of hours cleaning it out, even the DVD drive was full of dust and fluff. With that done I saw a Jasper 16mb on Ebay for $20.00 with a broken shell, the console worked fine, I used a CR4 XL for R-Jtag and did the transistor method for the Aud_Clamp, like banaswag I get instant boots 9/10 times. I just need to find a white shell, only the top part was broken, I can buy a whole used shell for $30.00 but will keep looking around for something cheaper, being the tight b@st@rd that I am.
New Update: My first attempt has had an upgrade, I removed the CR4 XL from the Jasper 16mb RGH2, put in a Matrix V3 that cost me $4.00 u.s.d. Thought I would try out RGH1.2, so I used the recommended rgh12_21.xsvf file to program the Matrix, changed the wiring to suit and didn't have to reflash the nand as it uses RGH2 files for that. It glitched first time, and does so the majority of the time, the longest is 3 glitch cycles to boot. RGH1.2 is awesome, you can use cheap chips and get out of this world boot times on Jasper's and Falcon's.
