Going on from the what are you listening to thread, if you were forced to listen to five artists or bands for the rest of your life which would they be? List one or two records that you would listen to too. For me it would be (in no order of preference) The Beatles - Do I really need a reason? They weren't the best band in the world for nothing. Having differnt muscial styles, experimentation in music and some odd lyrics just mean I could listen to them all day long. My favourite tracks include We Can Work It Out and All You Need is Love. Jamiroquai - Although Jay K in real life is a bit of a twat, I can' fault his music, songs or lyrics and I normally have at least a dozen songs of his on my 3GB MP3 player. I really get into Emergency On Planet Earth and Time Won't Wait. 808 State - Defined what decent techno music should be, Pacific State and Olympic are two great records. Level 42 - Although changed from Funk Jazz to 80s Pop, all there music I find is still very listenable and a joy to listen to Wings of Love (early tape mix) and Children Say. The Clash - Another great band that experimented with styles, London Calling and Rock The Casbah are great records.
EASY Nine Inch Nails- I'm like OBSSESSED with Trent Reznor. The Fragile has gotten me though some tough times. Today I was having a minor oral surgery done and I listend to Ghosts and the Slip is the most amazing Freebie ever (and I did buy the CD when it cameout) The Music just keeps getting better and better. I'm looking forward to Joining you finally is the song of my life right now. Tool/A perfect Circle- Nothing more relaxing than Maynard James Kenan's voice. I had to pick them both as the same band though since Maynard's voice is trademark of both. AEnima and Undertow are the must listens here. Eulogy, Prison Sex, 4*, Crawl away are all great songs. Marilyn Manson- Mechanical Animals is an all time classic. Channeling David Bowie and Holywood is a damn fine album too. Really you stirp away his image and he's just David bowie. Metallica- they pretty much suck (though Death Magnetic might turn em around) now Master of Puppets is a great album and the Black Album is the Thriller of Metal albums. Led Zeppelin- Easy to Chill to. Great songs early on, Werid ones near the end and just all in all a Great band. Honorable mentions- Queens of the stoneage, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Queen, and The Beatles
I think I don´t have a top five of artists for life, since if I am only allowed to mention five artists, then I am stuck in shitwille extremely quick. But The Beatles, Some of The Rolling Stones songs, Elvis Presley, Queen , and Depeche Mode. But I love so many other artists, and that is for life. So I can´t stop at five artists for life. Since I am for fucks sake a music lover. I can´t even go with five artists from every decade, that wouldn´t fit either.
HIM - They are the only band that i call myself a real FAN of and i love every single one of their albums. In Flames - I like most of their songs and even if the newer stuff isn't as good i still will listen to it. Rufio - MCMLXXXV is the only album i like from them but its an amazing album. LostProphets - Not the greatest band but Start something was/is one of my all time favourite albums, liberation tranmission is great as well. The darkness - seen them live after Permission to land came out and that albums holds so many memories from the time when i was listening to it.
In Flames - Jester Race, Colony Sinergy - Beware the Heavens, To Hell and Back Sonata Arctica - Silence, Winterhearts Guild Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper, Hatebreeder Nightwish - Wishmaster, Century Child
This is a tough one, as I listen to a pretty wide range of music styles- 1. NIN - one of my favorites also, got everything trent has ever put out 2. Tori Amos - Yeah everyone bags on her, whatever. I still like her (also have like everything she's ever relased too, which is a lot) 3) Mr. Bungle - Another group where I've got everything ever released, along with thier early demos & singles. Mike Patton is another one of those guys who just has a zillion little side projects to collect. 4) P-Funk - Parliment, Funkadelic, George Clinton, Brides of Funkenstien, etc. 5) Jane's Addiction - This was a tough one, but thier music is consistent enough that every record is a winner, very few crappy songs from them.
Death - Chuck Shuldiner was a musical genius and paved the way for death metal. His work in the genre is still unmatched, in my opinion. My Bloody Valentine - I don't know what to say here. It's like a warm, fuzzy blanket of sound. Easily one of the best bands that have ever graced my music listening devices :110: Tiesto - Sure he has a bunch of sound engineers that essentially do the work for him, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the music he puts out is amazing (namely the In Search of Sunrise series). Cocteau Twins - They're pretty girly but they're so soothing and it helps me get to sleep. Elizabeth Fraser has a wonderful voice. Cynic - They're kind of lumped in with Death, since two of their members were on a Death album, but I'd feel guilty if I didn't throw them in here. Thanks to these guys, I now equate jazz metal to peanut butter and chocolate. This was tough. These aren't the "best" bands I listen to, but the first ones I could think of.
Seriously? All of their stuff sounds far too similar. Far too many times do I hear the same cords over and over again. Lessons in Love and Running in the Familly could be mistaken for the same song:nod: Still I do like your selection. None of those "Hey let's be trendy" bands in there or shit nobody has ever heard of. Yakumo
So it has to be well-known or popular to be good? I don't know what to say to that without coming off like a dick. Rockin' the Depeche Mode at the moment, and I think they were greatly influential, although they didn't define any particularly amazing moments in my life.
The Jesus & Mary Chain: 'Upside Down' (unreleased 12") purely for the wall of noise that only the mary chain can create, and 'Reverance' for the hard hitting lyrical genius. Primal Scream: 'All Fall Down' and 'I'm losing more than I'll ever have', two glorious tunes that have never been surpassed. The Stone Roses: 'I am the resurrection' probably because I am! and 'Fools Gold' purely for its ability to "turn on, tune in and drop out". Velvet Underground: Anything with Nico's voice is dreamy, oh and probably 'I'm waiting for my Man'. Iggy Pop: Has to be 'I wanna be your dog' and 'The passenger', they kinda sum up a generation that will never be repeated or bettered. *edit - forgot to list a few songs :/ *
My top 5 would have to be Neds atomic dustbin Nirvana Pearl Jam Faith no more (inc Mike Pattons side projects) Stone temple Pilots
There's plenty of choice if you're a soul music fan (like me), so kind of hard to choose five artists. Here goes anyway: 1). Stevie Wonder: Many a classic from this guy. Personal favourites are 'Superstition', 'I Was Made to Love Her', 'We Can Work It Out' and 'That Girl', amongst others. 2). Aretha Franklin: 'Respect', 'Chain of Fools', I Say a Little Prayer', 'Day Dreaming', 'Untill You Come Back To Me', 'Don't Let Me Lose This Dream'. I liked the 80's stuff like 'Get it Right' as well. 3). Marvin Gaye: Where to begin really, what a voice. From the profound social commentary tracks like 'What's Going On', and 'Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)' to the more luvvy-duvvy stuff like 'Let's Get It On and 'Sexual Healing' to upbeat tracks like 'Got to Give it Up'. 4). James Brown: Needs no introduction! 'The Funky Drummer', 'The Payback', 'It's A Man's, Man's, Man's World', 'Get On The Good Foot' and a personal all time favourite: 'The Man In The Glass'. 5). Cutis Mayfield: One funky brother from another mother. Most know the massive 'Move On Up', my personal favourites: 'Superfly', 'People Get Ready', 'Mighty Mighty (Spade & Whitey)', 'Ain't No Love Lost', and 'We're A Winner' (with his group 'The Impressions').
1: MUSE - Hailing from the UK, definately my favorite band at the moment. The only band that has ever made me consider moving from the US to the UK just to be able to see them live :icon_bigg 2: Killswitch Engage - Mainstream metal from the US, another one of my favorites. 3: Nirvana / Foo Fighters - I dont really need to say much about Nirvana, and the Foos are amazing as well 4: Scars on Broadway - New band featuring the guitarist and drummer from System of a Down, for a first cd their cd is pretty damn good, if i do say so myself. 5: Myself and my best friend Doug - Put our guitars in our hands and we can keep ourselves and everyone else around us entertained for a few hours, until we are either too tired or too stoned/drunk to come up with anything else. we do covers too, but mostly we just mess around and improv off of eachother, excellent way to kill a night. Honorable mentions : Mushroomhead, Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, Metallica, System of a Down
Very interesting that you mentioned this band. A few days ago, I was recommended by a friend to check out this band, specifically, their album 'Psychocandy.' Good stuff. My five in order of preference: TOOL - Any album by TOOL is a must. If you listen to their first EP, Opiate, all the way to the latest album, 10,000 Days, you'll notice that every album has a new and exciting feel to it. I've been listening to TOOL since my friend popped in the album Ænima and played the song Ænema...the overall presentation of the song was orgasmic. That was in April of 2006, and from there, I still find myself listen to Ænima as if it was all new material. I really think because the songs are long and the Danny Carey sticks to complex polyrhythms, it's hard for it to ever get dull...atleast that's how it is for me. AFI - Huge fan of their album Sing the Sorrow. The song This Time Imperfect is one of my favorites on Sing the Sorrow. Other than Sing the Sorrow, I find myself listening to their older albums such as Very Proud of Ya and All Hallows EP. Finger Eleven - Finger Eleven's 'Greyest of Blue Skies' album is hands down the best album from Finger Eleven. From start to finish, this album is purely amazing. Slipknot - Several great songs from Slipknot from their self-titled CD to Vol. 3: Subliminal Verses. Haven't heard much of the new CD, so can't judge yet. Wall of Voodoo - Seven Days in Sammystown
This is probably the easiest question I could imagine. In no particular order: Sun Electric: 30.7.94 Casino vs. Japan: Whole Numbers Play the Basics (and Go Hawaii on backup) The KLF: Chill Out Kiln: Dusker The fifth one would be hard, but I'd go with Tetsu Inoue: Ambiant Otaku (and Inland & Organic Cloud for good measure)
misfits - 80s fits was the best band in the world (samhain included in this) slipknot - brilliant band, not a dull moment thruout their entire dicography, excellent live act aswell. type O negative - the 2nd best band ever, peter steele is the coolest frontman ever and has a divine voice. scorpions - the earlier stuff is incredible, fly to the rainbow was my very first LP back when i was 3yrs old, been listening to it ever since. black sabbath - 6 first albums laid the foundation for everything we know as metal/rock today, still cant be topped. honorable mentions: alec empire, wishbone ash, cyndi lauper, oasis, Tool, at the gates, blue oyster cult and "amiga 500" (fuckin love the music from the era of this amazing computer).
