Heya I've spent the last week working on a site (to be shown soon) and I've come to the point of installing some forums. However, the ftp setup pretty much bars me from adding phpbb/vbulliten/invision as MYSQL isnt fully configurable. As such, I'd like to offer some forums on this site, and without mysql I'm wondering what can i do. I've done some searches and come up empty handed, but is there any forum software that doesnt require a database, or mysql, basically a "self contained" forum? Sincerely Ryan
By definition, a forum is just a type of database. In DB lingo, all of the pages that we use to post and read threads are just "views" of the database. You might be able to find some really, really obscure java or flash based forum, but with the ease of PHP/MySQL, you would be really hard pressed to find one. Even if you did, you would really have to worry about security and hacking issues. Have you actually tried to install any of the forums? You say that MySQL isn't fully configurable, but what do you mean by that? Do you actually have access to MySQL databases, or are you trying to install the mysql service as well? Most MySQL implementations are not configurable at all, but should be in a usable state (unless the forum install complains).
I'm missing the database name and login info, and I've tried to install phpbb, with a "could not connect to database" I may try the old "localhost" login info, but I'm not holding out much hope Ryan
You have a MySQL database, set up by your hosting company, right? Log in to cPanel or whatever you have - you should have the login details there. If not, you may need to create the database first - in which case, it should be you who chooses the username and password. Look at the help section on your hosting company's site. It should tell you exactly what to use - e.g. whether or not it is localhost. If not, ask their support team - that's what they're there for! You may need to fiddle with permissions, or get them to turn a setting on, sure. As long as you have a (linux) hosting account with a database, you should be able to do this fine.
Heh, no worries Borman, it's not your site that I'm having issues with. I'm working on another ftp for a different site The phpbb came with a php file "dbinformer" which tested the mysql 3.xx...seems that i didnt have permission at all.....time to contact the site admins Ryan
Wish I could. I had it priced out, fairly cheap, lots of space....but of course they'd rather go through a friend of a friend's brother......... Ryan
Hmm. A three word sentence should suffice here. Please select from the following: FUCK FUCKING SHIT SCREW YOU GUYS I QUIT THIS ;-)
Oh....and the server decides when it wants to work Seems ill go with invision free boards instead of messing with this crap Ryan
LOL, yeah, sounds like a good option. Invision though *cringes* hehe. Still, it'll work!!! That's the main thing ;-)
