the usb port is used for accessories, guitar etc too. and adding the fact that you can't download VC or wiiware games, onboard memory should be enough for save games. so i won't be surprised if there is no way to transfer save data from this device.
Now that you mention it, thats actually quite possible. Would be quite funny/annoying if the exploits work just fine, but theres no way to get them onto the console lol.
Damn... As shitty as the Wii Min is I was hoping a deal would pop up for Boxing day (day after xmas here in canada) but sadly no. Guess i'll have to wait till they are discontinued to buy one for collecting. -edit- FYI, If someone wants one. I can get one for you but you'll have to pay all cost (I won't charge anything additional, Just purchase after tax and shipping cost). The units are pretty damn abundant up here. =/
If Nintendo was as lazy as we think... It might work to de-solder the NAND from a softmodded original Wii, socket it into Wii Mini, then run existing exploits to install a hacked OS.
damn. No Wii mini deals for boxing day. The best deal was like two weeks back when someone did $10 off. Oh well just going to keep an eye out for when they price collapse. For anybody reading here that is in canada, Shoppers Drug Mart is doing Clearence on all old Wii stock. So you can get the black wii (non GC model) w/ NSMB for $100 starting boxing day while supply last. The units will have 4.3 on them (I got one during black friday up here when SDM had them again at $100, the store near me still has a few).
Wii security doesnt work like that. Entire contents (well, except bootblocks) are encrypted with a unique, per console key. Which is stored in the Hollywood chip and isnt reprogrammable. If you had the key for the console, you could craft your own nand with homebrew etc. However, to get the key you need homebrew. Chicken and Egg.
I'll lean towards "specially crafted disc image that exploits a currently unknown buffer overflow in the software/hardware that reads discs". WiFi is a possible exploit vector but that assumes simply reattaching the WiFi card the system will even recognize the card. It stands to reason that if the traces are there it will work but until someone tries it noone knows.
These things are being sold all over Europe now for a while, don't think the Canada exclusive - sealed collecting to sell later will fly, in 15 years time probably all the wii mini's on-sale will be sealed.. I have spoken to one of the sellers in a major game shop, non have sold since release in his specific shop. As a joke: unsealed/without box wii mini's will most likely be more rare than sealed ones in 15 yrs time :livid:
I would applause to nintendo for coming out the mini wii that is unhackable since launch. They have crippled it in such a way that its basic function is to just read disc and save game files. P.S: can someone just chipped it and make it region free for goodness sake!
At least have a Wifi, actually I am not big Nintendo Wii fan. But I want at least Wii for playing some games.
It's not hacked yet for only one reason - nobody cares as you can buy a normal Wii without any problems.
I ended up buying on for my collection and was surprised how light it was. Should have called it Wii Lite instead. Seems it only weighs 724 grams instead of the Wii's ~1200.
Well it looks like this is being released in america with mario kart included. http://wiiudaily.com/2013/11/wii-mini-american-release/
as a collector item I don't see the harm one day online on the wii will shut down anyway and backwards is being fazed out anyway its still a shite console but on a collectors point of view its a needed addition to the collection they even released in uk in march 2013 now selling at £79
Disappointed to see they released it worldwide. Would've been more interesting of an item if it remained the odd Canada-exclusive Nintendo console it was in the beginning. More valuable, too.
It was inevitable. Silly to think Nintendo would make a drastic hardware revision (they almost never do) just for Canada.
It seemed like that before... the GBA SP AGS-101 revision also never appeared in Japan, and only in very limited markets in Europe.
