My guess is they are all just network adapters with stickers on them. If you ship out hardware before FCC certification then you need to mark it as a prototype, not for sale etc. It's possible they'd made a million of them and had them sitting in a warehouse before they started shipping out hardware with a prototype sticker on it.

Each Sony division is responsible for their own QA testing of games and hardware, so if they were testing a game in Canada that used the network adapter before it had been FCC tested then it's a prototype. The QA department need to be testing with final hardware, because otherwise they are wasting their time.

You could open them up and take photos and compare them against what is inside a retail one.

They are not the same, the QA Network Adapters look just like retail ones but the the first 2 are much thinner and not as fat.

There are two retail Ethernet network adapters SCPH-10250 & SCPH-10350 plus the Ethernet+Modem SCPH-10281. You have a CEX-10250, I would guess it was the same as the SCPH-10250. The rest as far as I can tell are either marked as SCPH-10350 and SCPH-10281. Apart from the stickers they likely match the SCPH-10250, SCPH-10281 & SCPH-10350

    The SCPH-10250 & SCPH-10350 is Ethernet only everywhere https://www.playstation.com/manual/pdf/SCPH-10350.pdf https://www.playstation.com/manual/pdf/SCPH-10350EE.pdf, the SCPH-10281 has a Modem+Ethernet https://www.playstation.com/manual/pdf/SCPH-10281.pdf

It's easy to find pictures of SCPH-10350 EU & JA retail packaging online, it may or may not have been sold at retail in NA but it appears to have bundled in the Linux Kit in NA. The SCPH-10250 may have only been sold in Japan and the SCPH-10281 may have only been sold in NA.

The SCPH-10281 is the one to own as it has the useless modem, the SCPH-10350 is likely a cost reduced version but I think it's functionally the same as the SCPH-10250. Nobody appears eager to open them up and post pictures of the insides, or at least I haven't found them with google.

I am quite sure that the SCPH-10250 is (slightly) older than the SCPH-10281, as it was released in Japan. The difference between the SCPH-10250 and SCPH-10350 was never known. Both were Japanese releases, if you notice the last digit of both model numbers.

The SCPH-10281 was only released in the US, as SCE deemed that there were a lot of users who still used dial-up.

I believe the original plan was release the SCPH-10281 worldwide but they canned it. The Japanese PlayOnline viewer supports it. You can connect and play the game with it through the analog modem perfectly.

The SCPH-10350 was sold in Europe without changing the model number, Sony aren't consistent.

It looks like they might have sold some SCPH-10280 in America as well, at least google finds people who mention that you can find it and someone sold one on ebay.

Maybe SCPH-10280 is the one to own :)

    It's the SCPH-10350 EE.

Okay, they might have planned a worldwide release for the SCPH-10281, but the fact is that it didn't happen. Plus the network starting guide from the SCE SDK states:
...which means that SCEA was the only one with official Analog modem support.

Also, unless you have photographs to show an actual SCPH-10280 (specifically, the sticker), I think that it's just a typo. I can't access the link that you shared.

The box/manual does, but the actual device is the same and just says SCPH-10350 on it. Similarly dualshock sold in Europe are in boxes marked SCPH-1200 E, but the controllers themselves are just SCPH-1200. The DVD IR Receiver+Remote uses the region number (SCPH-10170/SCPH-10171/SCPH-10172) etc but it does have a different DVD in each package (the receiver and remote are SCPH-10150/SCPH-10160 in all regions).

    It's all a bit of a mess.

Yeah, I copied the ebay link before trying it.. This mentions it. http://gamehacking.org/vb/threads/3778-What-do-I-need-for-Artemis/page2

Both the SCPH-10280 & SCPH-10281 were certified in Canada. https://industrycanada.co/number.php?ic=409+11797&id=53893
They might be identical internally, but with different numbers they'd have to get them both certified. So I would guess they already had made a load of them at this point and were going to sell them in Canada. Alternatively the SCPH-10280 might have only been certified so they could sell it to developers and maybe that is how they got out. It's difficult to know if everyone is just copy and pasting from everyone else, but I'm not ready to say it's definitely a typo.

We could ask l_oliveira where he got his two from.

@OP, personally, I found it hard to determine if your adaptors are special or not. I kept quiet because I wanted to leave it to someone with more experience (other than the CEX-10250 that looks like a real prototype, the rest look like finished models), but you are covering way too much.

You didn't provide a photograph of the faceplates of the 4 QA adaptors, plus you are covering up too much of the faceplates that you photographed (can't tell if there is anything special, based on it).

You could connect each of them to a console and run PS2Ident. That would allow us to determine if they have different SPEED chip revisions.

Remember the Ethernet only adapter was also released in the USA. With the Linux kit.

I didn't upload a photo because they look the same as retail ones but have a sticker with a phone number to call if found

Development equipment are leased, not sold. That's why these have such stickers. They still belong to SONY.

The face plate has information like the manufacturing plant and date codes.
