So as the title says I need a Free spreadsheet program. If anyone mentions Open Office I will kill them.
Open Off... err I mean Abykus. Or you might try Gnumeric, KSpread, ... I've also heard lots of good things about the Papyrus office suite, which isn't free, but cheaper than MSO at least. (Usually when I come across requests like this I point people to OSAlt, but in this case it didn't come up with anything useful besides OpenOffice) What's wrong with OO though? Too bloated?
Indeed what's wrong with Open Office? Apart from not being able to run excel macros and scripts without rewriting them and having a few other minor issues.
The deal with OpenOffice is when my school Didn't have Excel for a while we where forced to use it and it screwed a fair bit of my work up aswell as being horrible to use aswell as I only want an Excel program not the full suite.
The thing is if you want Excel then you are going to have to use Excel, so you will have to either buy a copy or just blantently pirate it. Out of all the free spreadsheet programs, Calc in openoffice is probably the best catch all excel clone as it does the vast majority of what Excel can do with the general exception of macros. The others mentioned are quite light and will do the mos common functions. What do you exactly want to do with it anyway?
I just want to be able to categorize the manufacturers model numbers and serial numbers of some electrical items i have.
Im not saying that it's just I hate the software itsself. the few times i've used it. It has been nothing but trouble.
Again in what way? I use it frequently and I've not had any issues with it, and the ones i did have were solved with 5 minutes with google. I would make sure you are using the current version of the software (3.1.0) as if you were using version 1 then i could understand why you did hate it as it was not very good but the latest version is good and anyone from an excel background should be able to use and work with calc without issues.
If that's honestly all you need it for then you really should just use Calc. If you're having problems with it for simple data entry like that then there's something seriously not right with your machine.
i will agree. Open Office sucks when you actually have to use it for professional work. But using it for the sake of it being open-source, then it is good.
Ill give it a trial but it was piss poor at school. That said they use computers that constantly network over all the resources all that are in the computers (which is basically a monitor) with wireless card inside it and is literally streaming over all the resources which may be the reason.
I found that most of the problems that people have with oo are with them entering in , instead of ; in formulas and they get pissed off it doesn't work.
Aside from the interface not feeling right (which happens anytime you switch programs), I just plain don't like the formatting problems that come with using OO versus MS Office. Regardless of what people say, they are NOT 100% compatible formats and there are way too many headaches when you have multiple people working on the same documents. Of course, one could just set up a MySQL database for part numbers too...
