The Europeans were over the fucking top. Not thinking for one second the added stress such bullshit puts upon those in the area in question. The American side was only "bad".

My parents were panicking too because I am planning to go on exchange to Tokyo or Osaka in 2013 and 2014. I then showed them the radiation levels for Tokyo and pointed out that they are actually lower than in New York City at the moment. End of story, they can't really prevent me from going there and I will go because it's my decision, but they are still a bit nervous about it. But I think 50% of this fear is also related to possible earthquakes rather than the radiation, so I understand them.

Did you know that there was a German "journalist" who claimed a complete LIE on live TV on one of the most reknown German TV channels (government owned)? This lie was even quoted on several foreign news pages like BBC until he had to redeem it on the station's official web page.
He said that homeless people, including underage children of 16 years, were 'used' in Fukushima to cool the reactor. The government hired them because no one would mind them die because of the radiation. Again, he claimed that on live television without ANY proof at all. The name is Robert Hetkaempfer.

    So much for the hype.

    Asshole.

That's a terrible thing to say. Not even a joke to me, that person is sick.

What are you confused about? I was very specific. German and French media specifically (if I am to believe my German and French friends here... which I do) did nothing but spew bullshit. It was pretty much the same across the region... or at least was reported to me by some Swedes & Swiss.

I can agree to a certain extent that the European news about the events was very thrill seeking and exaggerated. The Dutch news wasn't that bad, a couple of the professors from my university actually appeared on the news to talk about the events and what would happen afterwards, kinda funny when we heard that our class for the afternoon was cancelled, only to turn on the television and see our professor sitting there on live broadcast.

However, it's same with all the news. I mean if you were to go by the international news then around the times of the riots in Bangkok it seemed like the entire city was in total anarchy, yet my friends who were there told me that if you avoided two particular streets it was more than ok and the same as always.

The coverage in the USA was way over the top also. They were giving it ratings out of 10 and had meters going up in .1 segments with 'experts' saying how extreme it was and how long it would take to fix, etc. etc. Then suddenly, no more coverage.

The media likes to frighten people.
