Ok, here is a quick guide to chainsaw controllers by NubyTech:

This is the US retail controller which you can get for like 30$ from the Walmart trash bin:

They were produced by NubyTech for the western market limited to 50000 units, sold not so well since it is mostly a shelf item. You can get them a lot, there is also a yellow version for other consoles. I guess you saw them before, they are quite common, I have 4 of them I think.

No, one day NubyTech was amazed they sold these and was thinking about making Biohazard Controllers as well, somehow they were under the impression the japanese market prefers less bloddy items and they came up with this:

You notice it's black, has no blood and the serial is somehow strange. These were intended to be released in a 25000 item limitation to japan only. They showed this new one off at tokyo gameshow (yes exactly this one on the picture) and started series production.

But than it happened. Capcom licensed them the "Resident Evil" brand, not the "Biohazard" brand for controllers, and there was some lawyer stuff going on and NubyTech was ordered by court to destroy the unlicensed produced Biohazard 4 controllers.

So these were just legendary items until NubyTech went bankrupt. Some of them escaped the NubyTech basement to the outter world, including this one, but it is the only still alive proto I am aware off, the others floating around, maybe a dozend, all have normal counting serial numbers.

What tells you it's a proto? Well the Serial Number, if something is limited to 25000, it's usally not having 999xx item numbers. All protos have their numbering counted backwards.

I hope I could clear things on this item up a bit. For more on this special version of the chainsaw controller see the thread I linked for information in the sales post. It's all described there as well.

So are the Japanese originals rarer than the prototypes given their history, and the fact that they're the only units complete with display cases and certificates? Had they reached the market I could see high value in a prototype, but due to the fact that they were removed from the market and destroyed, would it not make the prototypes the more common out of the two?

I went to bed and I done alot of thinking about this thread. My memory are becoming more clear about this.
Like I said in previous post, I already seen Resident Evil Controller (black) with or without box of these in Virgin megastore in United Kingdom. NOT red with blood splatter on it like USA.

I guess there no such thing as prototype, they look all identical to me.

Only prototype is this... This picture belongs to Buyatari

    MVC-003S-69.jpg

Whole theories about this thread as a prototype chainsaw is either lack of evidence / misunderstanding or one big fucking bullshit story is waiting to explode.

Sorry I have to say this.

Why is everything being called trash in this thread? Is it a language thing? I'm currently searching for one of the trash RE4 controllers, unfortunately there are no trash stores here in the US, but if there were, I would certainly be buying a lot of trash!

Actually there is only this proto I am aware of so, it's pretty unique, there are like 12 retail units known. Simple math, both are rare, depends on what you prefer. Unreleased Proto or unreleased retail. Actually there is no retail for sale atm.

Actually, your memory is bad than. You at least noticed the black ones are labeled Biohazard, right? And these were never sold without a box. Is this your tactics to try to scare people off or are you trying to be forcefully right, lol.

Yet again, this Link has lot of useful information for you:

Here is more infos on another forum you might want to read:

Sorry, thats just a translation/language thing I guess.

First of all you could show us this second link right at the beginning from start.
I not scaring anybody. That is just nonsense. Some of things you saying is not always clear.

Again you gave me nearly 10 year old link which still doesn't mean anything yet because original poster just being original poster without having his source link. So he could be saying anything.

Now this getting confusing. You said that red with splatter blood sold as a retailer in shop? So why the link said that with blood splattered is a prototype?

Like I said. Box or without box. This going way back to 2007. It was a black chainsaw. But the lable is something I don't know.

I still not convinced everything about protoype is correct without having a proper source or more alike offical source.

Question is why it called prototype when it not actually prototype? Also I don't know why you use the word as a trash store? You mean the store is just rubbish or store sells items from rubbish bins?

Owner you bought from this site should explain his story how he got his in the first place. He may have a better soure or evidence.

It is a prototype, or did you ever see retail units with negative serials? -8 of 25000 or what? I have been collecting prototype hardware for quite a while.

The yellow controllers above is a mold/modelling sample, nice item but well it has no function as you can see. These are made in the design stage.

There are no black chainsaws which were ever sold, a very few only exist these days and they were designed for the japanese market only as well, you are wrong, sorry. Try to find them on the web you will fail.

The only pics you will find are either the concept art or presentation pics (some even showing my device), or the retail versions (red with blood). The NubyTech website is gone with the company and usalyl there is not much offically stated about trademark issues and unreleased hardware.

Either you belive it or not, no one forces you to buy it but your constant rant is anonying, can you please go on somewhere else and save my nerves?

No, not until moderator close this thread or otherwise it a free speech.

As you describe the serial number and label name brand is something I can't help you with.

Only reason I still ranting is because
I pretty damn positive it a BLACK chainsaw I saw.
Maybe...very few of them in 2007 and barely nothing in 2014? Goddamn... Only if I knew this thread was going to exist in 2014 then I wish I took some photo of chainsaw in virgin mega store in 2007 and save it for another 7 years.

I'm kind of man who is a asshole and don't give up that easily especially if I witness something.

FACT - Sam hex is right about black chainsaws not being released at retail.
There is 100% no way you saw a black one in a uk shop. Sorry to break it to you, but you're mistaken.

As for the serial, I own one of the handful that escaped destruction, serial 00002. It did NOT come from a shop lol.

The retail versions from the uk are red for ps2 and yellow for GameCube.
And they're titled Resident Evil. NOTHING with the Biohazard name was officially sold in the uk. And Virgin don't and never have sold anything imported in their video games section.

Lot of drama going on here.

Any Nuby controller with a 999XX serial number was not a retail product and was bought directly from Nubytech. DreamTR is the original owner of this controller. If you have specific questions I'd direct them towards Jason.

I'd also point out that this is not the only Resident Evil 4 black controller. There are more than one of these out there including a boxed one in one of the links already provided in this thread. The Resident Evil 4 box doesn't mean much because it is a standard US retail box. You could just swap one out from a retail unit if you wanted.

Is the manual and such with the retail units not in Japanese considering they were made for the Japanese market? That would certainly make them more valuable if unique collectible items were also destroyed. Good luck to the highest bidder, this almost feels too much of a good deal!

The prototypes don't have a own box, they are "boxless", the retail units had boxes also labeled Biohazard 4 and with japanese manuals. Take a look in the linked thread, there are nice pictures of the retail box from the retail units (these with the normal serial).

The black Biohazard 4 controllers that i have are 100% retail units. The manuals and boxes for those do have Japanese text. The Biohazard 4 controller are not prototypes. I own a Videogame store and was able to place an order directly with Nubytech thus saving a small pallet of them from destruction. Nubytech was not able to distribute these controllers to Japanese retailers but after some asking they were able to sell them to US retailers (me). Of course, other US retailers had no interest in Japanese controllers and wouldn't even think to ask. The shipping from Japan alone made it cost prohibitive for everyone else.

Funny that the canceled Japanese Biohazard 4 controller did have a tiny limited release of all places in the US.

The other prototype, test, mockup controllers that you see like the one up for auction only became available to collectors after Nubytech went under.

My suggestion above was that if you did have a black PS2 Resident Evil 4 controller and wanted a box then any retail box would match it.

Indeed, thanks. I guess that's part of the appeal of the retail units, assuming that whatever boxes and manuals they had also got destroyed along with the chainsaws, it's another part of the history you simply don't get with the prototypes. The 999XX serial plate is still nice though, and I actually like the finish of the prototypes better they seem to have a much cleaner design even compared to retail. It's a shame I didn't have more money this week!

Thanks for going into more detail, I was curious as to which edition has become the most valuable out of the two. My view would be that the retail units held more value thanks to the rarity of the Biohazard 4 accessories that completed the item, although the prototypes are equally unique with their own serial plate. It seems like the history kind of killed any real value these prototype controllers had, at least at the $800 mark like their retail companion. At $200 this still feels like a steal though.

Prototypes are for sure rarer. Many are one of a kind. As for value well I guess that depends on who is buying them.

I am pretty sure there is only 1 hard copy mold. When i look closely at it I can see faint lettering which leads me to believe that they stole the shape from an existing toy. If true that would make it a pretty cool find but would it be worth more than a retail Biohazard 4 controller? Personally, I don't think so. When you get down to 12 units vs 1 rarity isn't really much of a factor they really are in the same boat. Demand alone determines the price at this point and I would think that more people would want the finished product.
