I think that was from the time when people still thought the CD protection was in the ECC codes, a very long-lived myth.

I don't think you can burn the CD protection in any way, as it actually depends on the relative location of the grooves on the CD! Very hard to replicate.

I believe so, the protection data is stored in a similar way to the ATIP data on CD-R's. It's what they call out of band data, because it's not part of what gets burnt.

It would be like you building your own credit card out of cardboard, no matter how carefull you are about putting the correct data on it the clerk can see it's made of cardboard.

I don't like to say things are impossible, because it's possible with enough money to do lots of things. Nobody has ever burnt a CD-R that can be booted on an unmodified retail playstation, without a boot swap. Feel free to try it though. I'll buy you a beer if you succeed.

The Sony CD-r unit inside is actually a CDU-948s and marked as 'Version BF' - no other boards inside, just the drive, a substantial PSU and of course the SCSI connectors.

If anyone has a spare CD caddy or knows whether they are universal (i.e. all Sony models of that range use the same style caddy) then please let me know. The hunt is on!
