I got a Sony CDU921S compact disc recording unit. Was used for writing PS1 development discs. Its in nice shape with no scratches or discolouration. Powers on fine, though I can't check wether its working properly.

Last one on Yahoo Japan went for 19000 yen ~ £76 - http://page4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d81378841

So I will put a price of £65 + shipping on this. I'm willing to ship to anywhere in the world. I'd take trades on PC Engine and PS2 dev stuff either.

Going to have a sort through of stuff later as well so will have lots of retro stuff like SNES/Amiga/C64 stuff to sell/trade.

    ***********GONE - traded************

I assume this can as I saw standard looking retail units running off some builds on a standard CDR that were burned from this device.

Does the unit come with any special software? Does it require any special software?

are you sure? from what i've collected all over the internet in countless hours of studying and reading at cdfreaks, it can't... also if it could have done that, why they would have created debug psx?

anyway i would be happy to have someone proving me wrong!

I believe its basically a standard CD writer. They made grey debugs, so thats probably what you saw

It seems that the essential question is whether it burns the disc with a laser (the way modern consumer optical disc burners work), or actually etches depressions in the plastic (the traditional method).

Sorry, I have been attempting to piece together a PS1 development kit for a rather long time now and it's slowly coming together in tiny pieces. Jumped when I saw it.

    No, it's not possible.

No cd has ever been made by etching plastic. CD pressing plants stamp out the disc and then it's encased in plastic. There is no way that this can do that.

Probably had a mod chip fitted. Or it could have been a grey debug, mod chips are cheaper though.

smf, are burners completely incapable of burnign the protection? Or is that they won't because of the firmware in the drive not allowing you to? What I always heard was that you could make a bootable CD-R if you modified a burner's firmware so that it wouldn't correct certain errors that were placed there on purpose as protection. I imagien you don't hear much about this since modchips and swap tricks are just so cheap and easy to come by.
