Ah pity it wasn't a D40 otherwise I would have made an offer straight away rather then just think about it.

Might I ask why it makes a difference?

With the X you get an upgraded D80 sensor, ISO 100 instead of 200, 5 more megapixels SDHC support.

Mainly the D40 has a much faster sync speed 1/500 against the 1/250 of the D40x and the standard ISO 200 is better then ISO 100. 6MP is more then enough for me, my Casio EX-Z850 is normally used in 6MP mode as that's all I need it for.

The D40 also has SDHC support too.

Pretty sure the d40x has SDHC support as well.

It does. D40x was just an updated D40 there's a lot of dispute between which is the better camera. A friend of mine had the D40 and we couldn't really tell the difference between a few photos we took together, the 10MP allows for more cropping and slightly better enlargement and that's about it.

Yeah the D40 holds a better flash sync speed but I can't say I've used flash much in the last year I've owned it, I bought a VR lens to counter that so it doesn't keep me up at night. Either way I love this camera, my girlfriend sports a D80 and the D40x keeps up without all of the million other features.

@Borman, I noted you added me to IM, nothing shows up though.

    Eh. I have a d40x with a 55-200mm lens, and there's quite a few reasons I chose it over the d40.

And I wouldn't trade it for the world, what are you thinking man

The only things I can see different from the D40 to the D40x is the fact it can shoot half a frame faster a second (3 vs 2.5), it's 10mp rather then 6mp but it has a slightly worse shutter and lower default ISO oh and it was more expensive then the D40.

Anyway twimfy I am still going to think about it, going to see what they sell for second hand in Japan and I'll go from there.

Why do you want a Japanese model specifically? I'm sure you know about the unibios upgrade, but it can make your AES any region, even MVS, and enable codes and the like, plus upgrades are free on it. Also, there's a very easy RGB bypass mod, which can make higher serial AES's have the same colour output as the lower ones.

I'm not sure why someone wanting a D40 would care about flash sync, but maybe I'm "out of sync" with the camera biz.

Because blood etc without having to dick around with the console would work nicely for me. Also a PAL console is 50hz and I don't do 50hz.

    Is the US version censored?

Yep. I guess if you don't want to modify then Japan is the way to go. It's very easy though, you can take out the current ROM chip, install a socket, so the new unibios's are plug and play and easy to remove, or you can even piggyback the current chip. It's pretty easy. Once it's in there is a frontend where you change a load of options, and even use the console like a jukebox for the great neo music. I'm pretty sure the 50/60 mod is just cutting a few traces, similar to the megadrive one, pretty simple.
