Thought I was born in New York, I was there so few time I couldn't consider it my hometown. So, here are some facts about Montevideo: - Half of the population are public employees - Home of the CHIVITO (described a month ago on the unmoderated thread) - Home of the first soccer World Cup But mainly, Montevideo is the home of BOREDOM. Nothing happens ever here (well, consider Motörhead's show last week as one of the few exceptions). EDIT: I forgot about this, a curious thing about this city is that you can see lots of people around the streets with their Mate (some sort of herbal energy drink). It's used mostly as a substitute of coffee (to be honest, we all have it here at work right now).
Newcastle Upon Tyne - England, UK. A city of firsts: - Stephenson ’s Rocket, which won the Rainhill Trials in 1829, was built in Newcastle. Its design set the standard for steam locomotives for a century and more. - The first public demonstration of the light-bulb was given by its inventor Joseph Swan on 3rd Feb 1879 at a lecture theatre in Newcastle, therefore it was the first public building in the world lit by electric light. In 1881 Mosley Street in Newcastle became the first street in the world to be illuminated by electric light. - The world’s first organised dog show was held in Newcastle on June 28 1859. It was only for Pointers and Setters, and was the brainchild of a Mr Shorthose and Mr Pape. Some 60 dogs were entered. - Geordies are so called because the city was the only one in the North East that supported George II and closed its gates to the Jacobite army during the rebellion of 1745.
Amsterdam, Netherlands Amsterdam has one of the most famous Red Light Districts in the world with window prostitution. There are almost 500 such windows in Amsterdam, next to brothels etc. Daily, about 1,000 prostitutes are working in Amsterdam and in a given year, the city sees about 8,000 different prostitutes. There are over 200 'coffee shops' in Amsterdam where you are allowed to buy up to 5 grams of cannabis (marihuana or hash). Since the 1970s, buying of cannabis has been decriminalized. Five grams, by the way, is enough to stay sky high for several days. Most other drugs are banned, however. This was actually quoted from this site because i was too lazy to write it up myself.
Columbus Georgia ... Original home of Coke (Even though it was claimed to be Atlanta) Home of AFLAC insurance Home of TOM's snack foods Original home of Charbroil (grills, etc) Original home of R.C. Cola Home of to NCR which makes 99% of the worlds cash registers. I'm sure there is a bunch more stuff you wouldn't guess came from this hick town. Edit: I guess you can include Ft. Benning since it really is one and the same with the city. Largest infantry base in the US.
-Disney World -highest concentration of child molesters per capita in the south east, possible America. -autistic 5 year old drowning 2 year old sister
Home of L M Ericsson, founder of the Ericsson phone company, Kenny Bräck and Christian Ericsson, famous Swedish painter and sculptor.
- Has had the same beat up buses for over 15 years because they "privatised" public transport to avoid "monopolies" and the governor of the time bought all of them through name-lenders, then always vetoed regulations so he didn't have to upgrade them. - Was at some point the de-facto capital of Mexico, during the Liberals vs Conservatives Reform war of 1858-61. - About the size of Philadelphia - Sister city of Kyoto - Name is originally arabic, and means "Stone River" - just like the japanese Ishikawa.
Waynes world suposively took place here but only the sign and the white castle scene were filmed here. I still go to that white castle all the time. too bad they tore it down and built a new smaller one on the same spot. :crying: And i think it was the first city to have electric street lights in Illinois.

Here are some weird facts from my hometown Amsterdam: Hookers pay tax Coffeeshops are allowed to sell weed, but not grow or buy it. You can smoke weed in the street but not on a square. Since the anti smoke law you are not allowed to smoke a joint with tabacco in coffeeshops, you can however smoke the weed pure. Alcohol and weed are not allowed to be sold together/at the same venue. Amsterdam has over 1 million bikes but only 700.000 residents. The city is actually 4 meters under sea level.
- Aberystwyth's University holds the accolade of having the first machine to ever discover new scientific knowledge on its own volition (if only they'd called it Skynet). - PSX game Koudelka was set here (odd choice). Other than that, we have a beach and lots of take aways. Yeah, go Aberystwyth \m/
A few chosen facts: -world's tallest building in 1439 -creation of the first moveable type printing press around 1440 -dancing plague of 1518 -first modern newspaper published in 1605
La Crosse, Wisconsin: - Home of the World's Largest Six-Pack (apparently built in 1969) - several college students have drowned in the Mississippi River after drinking at bars a few blocks away from the river (one conspiracy theory is that it's the work of a serial killer, and another is that it's the work of the Moth Man. Nutjobs ahoy.) - used to be a logging town until about a hundred years ago (La Crosse was incorporated in 1856, founded in roughly 1850) - too many bars for morons that can't even drive too well when sober - Ed Gein was born here.
