I've watched two episodes now and I must say it lacks a lot of its charme! I wouldn't even blame the narrator (which is OK I guess - could've been a lot worse) but the missing history, tamagee and interview segments. The challenges are only one part of the show, what I always enjoyed more than anything else was Tamagee and the Famicom history parts. Seeing Arino indulging old video or prize games in some hotel was a lot of fun. I also really liked seeing the Famicom sections with Sunsoft, Jaleco, Nichibutsu, Capcom or whatever collections. It inspired me for my own Famicom collection and it was also really interesting to know what the Japanese kids liked back in the day.

Something I was missing in the actual challenges is the DRAMATIC MUSIC. The Japanese original dubbings were always like "OMG - IS HE GONNA MAKE IT?????" in a totally overdriven way. They cut out all the cheesy music in the Kotaku-version, which is a shame (in some trashy way).

Why did they edit the show in the first place? They always do when bringing shows to the west.

The changes are terrible. The voice overs are not dramatic at all, and the gameplay becomes so boring because there are no information brakes or anything in between.

There's only so much announcer you can take, with someone falling down a pit for the 100th time before you need a brake (Like going to a game center, or talking with a developer).

They cost about 80$ each so I guess you'll probably just torrent them :p

    Indeed there is
    [IMG]

Amazon japan has them the cheapest but even there isn't that cheap, japanese dvds in general are stupidly expensive compared to the west. The combined price of all in that pic would buy you a ps3 & a couple of games easily lol

Torrenting video is a pain int he ass.
And I checked Play Asia has the first 3 for $93 each. Then I checked You tube....

Still If I can find the DVDs somwhere I'll get them

I know I bought a few Ghibli DVDs from Japan before not to mention stuff from my friends in Dragon Gate

Anyways all this gave me an idea for an upcoming episode of Retrocade Fantasia...if you want an authentic Localized Game Center CX...You'll get it.....

Thanks Consumed. We can't see the Western version in Japan.

Fair warning - afaik the dvd boxsets aren't sequential / season boxes, theyre just random 'best of' sets

Yeah I know I found a few subtitled things online I actually posted the Castlevania III Episode on my You Tube channel. If it goes over well enough I might use elements in my own show.

None the less downloaded or not as a true gaming historian I hope to get my hands on the DVDs.

Where did you find the subtitled Dracula Densetsu episode? The only subbed ones I knew so far were done by the TV Nihon community, and they have long stopped doing new subs for the show.

Cool! Thanks a lot, I wasn't aware that somebody else started translating the shows. Just got all episodes, can't wait to watch them tonight :)
