since i had to fix my teachers old big gameboy,i want to pick up one myself which model should i go with? the original, the colour or the advance? since that are the main 3 models, with forward compatibility, effectively increasing the games avalible
Advance SP, plays all the games and you get the lit screen and rechargeable battery the GBA should have had all along.
Original gameboy is retro chic - only grey/black cartridges. Pocket has a clearer, sharper screen and plays those same cartridges. I want one. Color, screen is smaller, but you can play any pre-advance game in colour. Great form factor. GBA, horrible dark screen, but comfortable imo. GBASP, plays any game boy game, but the 1st gen screen, as mentioned by a previous poster, is fowl. Looks washed out but at least you can see the bloody games. Best option for funcationality. GBA Micro is awsome but only GBA. IMO, one of each for as the mood takes you. Want retro chic? Original. Versatility? SP. Tbh though, you can pick them up for pennies now so just grab the one you feel like the most- if that doesnt suffice, get your second choice, too... http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20167 Some screen comparisons in that thread.
GBA SP w/improved backlight is ideal (AGS-101, the regular SP was called AGS-001). The DMG-01 is nice for nostalgia and collecting, but there are more comfortable ways to play Gameboy-games these days.
I'm going to be contrarian and say just get the Gameboy Player for GCN, with the Hori SNES-style pad to control it. That'll get you everything from original GB up through GBA. Who really wants to play on a handheld if they don't have to?
The original gameboy has a dreadful screen. The pocket has a much nicer screen that doesn't blur as much The light is a pocket with a blacklight that can be turned off The color is the nicest machine for GB and GBC games as the screen under reasonable light is clear, colorful and hardly blurs. The advance is a horrid machine with a screen that is very hard to see. The SP has a washed out look to games and suffers from the same fault below The SP2 is nicer but a pain to hold if you are playing GB or GBC games. Personally I mainly have GB and GBC games and use a nice GBC console..
That's a pretty good summary, mirrors my own experience. I'd also recommend the second SP model, mine was the first SP I'd spent any time with and putting it side by side with my mate's standard SP made the difference very obvious. It was night and day, really. Shame mine has developed dead lines on the right side of the screen; not like it's been kicked around, either. Anyone got any experience of the GB Light? Does the backlight do its job?
Well you can play games in the dark, so I suppose it does it's job. However the screen blurs a little more then without the backlight. if you can use sunshine or a decent light..
Original GBA's screen is horrible, I was so disappointed with it. Was actually the first Nintendo portable I'd ever owned (at the age of 19...) and only bought Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Metroid Fusion for it. I can't stress how bad that screen was, although I can't really compare it to earlier Gameboy iterations.
Of all the GB models if you only own one the best to get is the GBA SP. I have the first model. Honestly the screen looks excellent. I've never been bothered by it. But I've also never seen a 101 model GBA SP. While it's true that the GBA SP isn't comfortable to hold, it still gets the job done and I've played many GBA games on it like Metroid just fine. The GBC seems to be nicer to hold but with no screen light, it's a major drawback. But it is possible to modify a GBC with a lighting system and if you do that's the best for classic GB/GBC games. So really I would say if you want all Gameboy games, get the GBA SP. If you don't want or need GBA, get a GBC and modify it with a lighting system if you can. If you don't care about GBC games, get a GB Pocket, modify it with a lighting system if you please. Unless you care about ass kicking sound quality, there is little reason to buy an original GB. The screen is very blurry and generally not fun to look at. Sure it's a tough brick but there are better models.
decided to pick up the original brick, ill buy a seperate GBC later this thread can by turned into a gameboy discussion, seeing you guys have great feedback
You seem to forget something very very important. The GameBoy Pocket. This is the best and most portable version of the original GameBoy brick, runs on two AAA batteries and it still looks beautiful in silver (or other colours if you rather have) The screen is 50% more visible and replaces the green-hued LCD with a proper monochrome black/grey.
+1 Besides that it's only appreciated for its sound abilities, if you want to create, play and record music on it. But otherwise the comparatively bad screen and the need for 4 AA batteries don't really make it good for everyday use. I'd say GBC is the way to go here. With its smaller size, crisper screen, ability to play GB and GBC games and the need for only 2 AA batteries it's a clear improvement over the original GB (and the GBP in my opinion).
Original Game Boy takes 4 AA batteries and lasts 20+ hours. GB Pocket takes 2 AAA and lasts 4 - at most. I know which I'd rather have. And I've yet to find a GBC only game worth playing.
Puyo Puyo 4 maybe. Oh and LSDJ also takes advantage of the faster CPU and larger memory and runs much smoother on the GBC.
