Jet Grind Radio has such a awesome soundtrack. Are there any other games that come to mind that feature music in the same way. I.e. Vocal music, by musicians (guitar, rock band based).
The only other HIP SOUNDTRACK game I can think of is Space Channel 5. Yeah that's it I was wondering this same thing.
Shoot I gotta play that.. I forgot about Space channel 5. Oh and I loved Parappa the Rapper those songs were classic. Awesomely Parappa The Rapper does have a bleemcast release
In my opinion, the likes of Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, Jun Senoue, Richard Jacques and Hideki Naganuma were probably just as responsible for Sega's golden age than its resident programmers or designers! Of course, these days all we have left are glimpses to remind us such genius was once contained within a single company in the first place...
It's a shame Sega became the Shovelware company it is now. Sometimes I feel like the only company that cares about it's fanbase is Capcom.
Isn't Lords of Thunder the definitive hard rock game soundtrack? Guitar-heavy, drumming that evokes the title of the game, and distinct tunes that fit the levels. For something more cacophonous and abstract, I'm quite fond of the Darius Gaiden music, which is what I imagine heavy metal sounds like in Phillip Glass's head.
The Phoenix Wright series! - It's not vocal music, and not rock either, but it's a great soundtrack! Burnout series. - vocal based rock mostly Prince of persia: warrior within. - not vocal based but ROCK! (you should really give it a try!)
Though Crazy Taxi 2 has a great soundtrack, I prefer Crazy Taxi (1). Bad Religion and Offspring (better songs that are on Americana).
The soundtrack to all three Katamari games has the same experimental j-rock feeling from JGR and JSRF that evokes so many memories.. I loved Guitar Vader's tracks on JGR, for example - "Super Brothers" and "Magical Girl". The whole soundtrack was almost magical to me. Yes, get the Katamari soundtracks, they have lots of similar audio treasures. I know of few games with such awesome musical quality Completely unrelated to gaming - but if it's the music that you're looking for, then perhaps you could get some similar musical experiences with other artists like Tujiko Noriko, Chara, and Kana. Phrequency is very right with Kenichiro Fukui's Einhander. That is one of the most awesome shooter soundtracks from the 90's (ThunderForce V was also awesome if you liked stereotypical shooter music) -
The only thing I hated about JSR is that it loops in a wierd way, and since I found that game hard to figure out what to do at times, it got pretty annoying.
Slipping out of Sega fanboy mode for a moment, the Katamari series is another personal favourite. On the subject of Crazy Taxi, surely I wasn't the only person to discover Bad Religion because of that game?
The difference is that this music was licensed out from professional musicians. Not fake ones that only make game music. Virtual On did something similar, but the artists had to follow certain "guidelines". AFAIK, Hideki Naganuma did the soundtrack for Ollie King as well. Never heard it though, and the game center that had it ages ago was really loud, so I couldn't really hear much.
I really liked these: Arc the Lad Lunar series Chrono Trigger Kingdom Hearts Yoshi's story God of War Dawn of War Shadow of the Colossus Theres probably many more I like, I can't remember.
