This also received a PC release. Fun little game. You & me both! That was one weird game. Remember it being pretty hard, as well.
Certainly 3 was. I think I'm rather used to PZ and PZ II now. P.T. Is surely where the frights are at. I was quite serious when I mentioned I couldn't sleep for a week. I always felt someone was behind me. THAT... Or I'm a little bitch.. and most likely I am Quite interested Alien Isolation, watched a 30 minute playthrough a few hours ago. It seems rather intense, just expensive at the moment though. Waiting for a steam sale
The game that REALLY scares me is Silent Hill on Playstation. I was 10 at the time. I did played Resident evil 1,2 and 3 when I was 9 but nowhere near as Silent Hill.
Definitely, Silent Hill 2 Reading the thread title I was thinking "well, nothing...." then I was reminded of Silent Hill 2 and, yeah, that's some freaky stuff. It's so utterly surreal as well...aside from being just plain scary.
Resident Evil games had some good jump scares but they to me were not nearly as tense and scary as the Silent Hill games.
In Dead Space 2 there's a section where you return to a familiar location, but instead of being infested with Necromorphs it's deathly silent, not a mutant to be found. That was one of the moments in survival/action horror where I was truly scared, in fear from nothing but silence and the anticipation knowing that I'm all alone but something could jump out at any moment. That's one of the reasons why Dead Space 2 is so good to me, because it's the environments and your own imagination that create the fear, not just the gore and jump scares. Silent Hill is another obvious one. It was the noises over the radio that used to freak me out, it's creepy like waking up in the middle of the night to see a test card on the TV as a kid.
That really is an excellent comment. I've seen lots of these "Scariest games/game moments" threads, and people always say the Silent Hill games (SH1 was very disturbing, and 2 even more so, I've not personally played the others), Resident Evil, the Cradle level from Thief 3 (that is extremely unnerving, all the more so since the rest of the game isn't frightening at all), the Fatal Frame games, Doom 3 (which I never found frightening, just boring), System Shock 2, etc, but no one has ever mentioned Operation: Flashpoint. I've played lots of first person shooters (my favourite genre), but I've never taken to Operation: Flashpoint, as it's so very difficult. I've no doubt that it's a fantastic game, as those who have more patience than me and like realism in games really love the game, but for me the realism makes it un-enjoyable. But it is very atmospheric, even despite the rubbish graphics (it looked rubbish even when it came out, around 2001) which shows how good the atmosphere is, since usually it's graphics that make up most of the atmosphere in games. And you really do feel like you're in a war zone, with death always just a second away (unlike in 'realistic' (yeah right!) games like Medal of Honor/Call of Duty, Operation: Flashpoint lets you die from one head-shot, from a sniper who's too well hidden for you to see, or from a patient, camouflaged, enemy hidding in the bushes, etc), and it's very good indeed. But the emphasis is firmly on realism, and unlike later games that claim that, in this case it really is true. I've heard that there are several sequels, but I think that they are inferior to the original? Anyway, it's been years since I played it, so I think I'll dig out the disc and try it again - maybe my tastes have changed, and I'll grow to enjoy the game more now.
Don't get me started on Tingle, getting caught in a conversation with him is by far one of the scariest moments in all of Zelda history.
I wonder who at Nintendo, felt a need to make this game? I see that Tingle is more important, than Toad for Nintendo, because Tingle got his game first.
Pretty sure Ubisoft put out a terrible fps under the Operation Flashpoint name but the original development team went on to create the ARMA series, which looks just as hardcore as the original OF. I too want to play the original again, it was unlike anything back in 2001. I didn't even get far into the game but the euphoria from pulling off a mission successfully was something else.
Only Alone in the Dark, mostly because i was seven or eight years old. Then nothing. There are some good horror games but not so scary. My TOP5 could be: Alone in the Dark, Siren, Rule of Rose, Nanashi no Game and Alone in the Dark 3 (not horror focused but i loved the western theme, the most underrated of entire series so far).
Play Alien Ressurection on the Ps1 on hard difficulty (best played with a Ps1 mouse or with the dual analog setting) and you'll see it is as scary as Isolation
Half-Life 2 (mostly the enemies, there are creepy enough only with its sounds)... And Doom 2 (not much).
Ah, yes FEAR, now that was an impressive game. It was scary, but I really enjoyed the game itself, it was very fun. I have a friend, who had nightmares of one of the FEAR games.
The original Alone In The Dark is STILL surprisingly scary. Gotta mention System Shock 2, but the worst was Silent Hill. Only game to make me leave an in-game area simply because of the music. Alone. SH1 was just raw scares, while SH2 was gripping and emotionally disturbing. Still some of my favorite two games. Also I really want to play Alien Isolation.
