I was a really wimpy kid and couldn't handle anything in a game that was even marginally horror-themed (I was scared of Mad Monster Mansion, for christ's sake). I've grown out of it since then and it takes quite a bit to actually scare me, but Siren on PS2 is just about the only game that I really dread the thought of playing. I can't think of a single other game where I've felt more helpless.
I remember playing Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 on PS1 without problems. Yes there's some jump scares and the logs / texts on Resident Evil 2, but it's more action than just scary parts. Silent Hill was on another level, Silent Hill 2 and 3 are just as good if not better. I never played Silent Hill 4: The Room though. Dead Space was one of the best horror games last gen and only discovered it two years after release, when i finally got a PS3. That's one of the games every gamer should have on his/her collection. Dead Space 2 and the whole dementia Isaac is going through has some borderline disturbing parts. The way the game starts sets the tone really. It's embarrasing what EA did with Dead Space 3. I honestly hope they never try to make another game, just look what Capcom have done to Resident Evil. Even thought i still haven't played it through, The Last of Us is truly an amazing experience so far. Also, Half Life 2 deserves to be mentioned simply because of the Ravenholm level and those damn poison headcrab zombies. The noise! Plus i"ll never forget Alyx saying "That's the old passage to Ravenholm. We don't go there anymore." and then finding out why! Honorable mention goes to Metro Last Light, simply because of those bastards PS: One game i'm looking forward is Routine
Not counting games with jump scares, because anything that can replace the monster with a baby panda and still have the same effect can't really be called "scary". Instead, I'm looking more at "chilling" games. Eternal Darkness had a lot of these moments for me, when you walk past the bust and its head turns to follow you, when you inspect the bath and find your own corpse in it etc. It was a really creepy game. Also giving mention to the chained monster in Resident Evil GameCube remake, it's cry always sends a chill down my spine.
I seem to remember two main things - on the first level, the bad guy comes out from behind a wall and slams a plank of wood in your face which really makes you jump. Then later on there are the creatures that go invisible like Predator and leave vaguely wobbly airspace around where they are, and then they appear and scare the cr&p out of you! Really used to get the hair on the back of my neck standing to attention...
There's a part I like in the first FEAR that takes advantage of the blind spots when you're climbing a ladder. You're facing the ladder and when you start to climb down, you turn around to face the ladder and suddenly the Ring girl is standing at the top of the ladder directly in from of you. Then after you climb down and turn around, there's a guy standing right in front of you. Smart game design there!
Alien Isolation is fantastic, so intense. Had a recurring dream as a kid of one getting in the house and I had to hide from it. Had another one thanks to this game! Silent Hill 2 is unsettling but the ghost children (Larval Stalkers) in the school of the first game really unnerve me. That squeaking noise they make just makes it worse. They're not even an enemy and are totally harmless but I hate those damn things. >_< PT is on another level though.
The only one game that scared me, per say. Pathways of Darkness (second Bungie game they did on the Mac)... Anyways in Pathways of Darkness had a monster that was green with a tongue sticking out for a face, they also made this weird noise. The game didn't scare me, but it did give me nightmares for a couple days. :/ =hugh
I was pretty scared when my dad first played Silent Hill Homecoming for the first time. He let me watch him and when I saw the nurses for the first time I almost screamed (I was young at this time). After that, I've always been into horror games
F.E.A.R for the PC is still one of the freakiest games I have played in a while. The part where you go down the ladder and because of the animation you turn around and then when you turn back around the creepy girl is standing right in front of you. Something is wrong if you don't jump at that. How about good ole Resident Evil as well.
