Thought I'd garner a few suggestions before I spend $5-600 on a new TV. Currently I'm eyeing a 48 inch Sony Bravia. Main purpose gaming, and watching Anime, My current TV has me unable to read the small white text used in current anime blu ray subtitles.

That said, I'm not locked in on the Bravia, upconverters will be used for anything before last gen. 4:3 enforcement for somethings is a must. I'm not sure what kind of refresh rate I should be looking for either.

    Thoughts and suggestions?

I shouldn't bother with 4k yet either right? The Only 4k content available to my knowledge is porn and I don't need to see any one get porked in THAT high a resolution.

I'd be surprised if you can get a 4k TV for 600 usd!?
Personal experience is that a Sony, Panasonic, Samsung are all good.
Samsung are overpriced in the UK, so I went for a Panasonic led when I refreshed last year.

Actually, Netflix has 4k content, but it's not nearly enough for a 4k TV to be worth it IMO.

Sony Bravias are solid. I bought a display model around 2010 and it still works as well as it did when I purchased it. I believe Samsung manufactures Sony's screens for them.

I saw a 40 inch 4k Vizio tv for about $650 it was tempting but the content just isn't there yet. My Cable company still broadcasts in 1080i........

I have a 4K monitor and I love it. Its really only good for programming and gaming though. Its great having all this screen real estate and it makes games look gorgeous. Going back to 1080p and it looks like shit, I can't believe I used to think that was good XD.
I wouldn't recommend a 4k tv though, there is hardly any content.

I actually just bought the Playstation 3D display for like $100. Its coming this week. I'm pretty excited.

It's 24", and they were probably trying to get rid of it since they're no longer being made. Good price, but I've heard the build quality is bad.

I have one of the 70" P series Vizio TV's and love it. I don't do SD feeds other than Youtube or DVD's, but the picture quality is great. I wish there was more 4K content, but the couple of series we have watched on Netflix and Amazon have been noticeably higher quality.

Save up a little more and get a 4K. True there isn't much now but it is coming and you will be better off in the long run.

Anything marketed as "For gaming" is marketing bullshit, but 4K at least you're future proofing a bit more but some might give you troubles without an upscaler. Personally myself I would save for a 4K, just so it's not instantly out of date for any future consoles or devices.

Come on we all know by the time 4k is up to date, 8k tvs will be the new hotness.

Not necessarily, some TVs have a game mode that reduces input lag.

4K is amazing, but imo its really only good for monitors right now. PCs can really only handle that high a resolution for games and there is almost no video content.

I don't see 4k catching on as fast as standard HD did. I forsee people feeling like it's being force fed to them, MOST TV networks still have SD Feeds and ONLY SD Feeds

Here's how I see 4K evolving: people might be hesitant to buy new 4K equipment now, but eventually it'll just be built into everything anyway, or it'll be cheap enough that there's no reason not to get a 4K display as opposed to a 1080p or lower display. There are already phones with QHD (which I think seems excessive on a display that small), and there are prototypes of phone-sized 4K displays. They're already cheaper now than they were a few years ago, and they'll probably continue to get cheaper.

Here's another prediction: I think 4K or maybe 8K will be the last shift in resolution for physical displays. It's high enough that it's sufficient even for very large displays, and overkill for anything small. Maybe eventually we'll have "displays" that connect directly to the brain and allow for a higher resolution than the unaided human eye is capable of perceiving.
