Congrats, you finally caught up with how the rest of the world feels about America and its laws.

 

It sucks. Why hasn't somebody stopped us?

 

We would but now we've shot ourselves in the foot with Brexit and you're the only friends we have left.

 

So... the world's fucked? Glad it only took a 3-page thread on a near-defunct Obscure Gaming (oops) forum for us to figure that out.

 

The world really is fucked if Obscure Games is considered a viable alternative to this site.

 

I think Kev's cum might be clouding your vision a bit on this one fam, maybe you should ask him to just finish in your ass next time instead of pulling out.

Will be interesting to see how the EU attempts to enforce this overseas, if it does attempt to.

You can see how well copyright enforcement works with some countries. Can't imagine this law would be enforceable in countries where copyright laws aren't.

 

Its going to target the googles, amazons and facebooks. They do business in the EU, so they can and will be fined. While this law applies to all business, its clearly crafted to target the large corps that have had no end of data breaches over the last couple of years.

If you are a USA (or any other non EU country) based business, with no offices in europe - you could ignore it, get fined and then basically have to not travel to the EU anymore. Likely get your website blocked, etc. Look at people who have been arrested once landing in the USA - same deal here.

I dont see how people are struggling to see how this can be enforced. It can be indirectly as well as directly.

Its not stopped the USA before. EU are just copying the USA playbook

 

Oh I'm not talking about such things as arresting them if they step a foot in the EU and charging them fines (which if they don't plan to go to the EU they wouldn't need to pay), but it's not like they could enforce it on a US sole proprietorship that never sets foot into the EU. I'm just wondering if there is anything they'll try to do besides that.

Are there websites that are blocked in the EU? Or is there even precedence for websites being blocked in the EU? I'm not sure about this. I'm mainly wondering if there will be political action against countries who harbor people or businesses not abiding by this.

 

I accept that the GDPR may have problems. I just think the way Assembler has mixed up his not very well thought out thoughts/feelings on the matter with the operation of the site is ridiculous.

 

I don't see the issue with a privately owned forum. You are not a company offering services in the EU and asking money for it in a commercial way. You are not targeting EU customers. Donations don't count. So I don't see why everybody is overreacting.

 

In the UK (cant speak for rest of the EU) - they have been setting the groundwork for this for quite awhile. They bought in an internet blacklist for child porn (so it got passed, whos going to disagree with filtering child porn sites?!). Then once the tech was put into place, then came adding the pirate sites. Its also been found to have completely innocent sites "by accident" that are political.

So its in place, it wouldnt surprise me if this is the next step.

 

The UK has passed the Data Protection Bill recently and there is an ongoing review/update of the Data Protection Act. What this essentially means is that once we officially leave the E.U, the UK will have its own set of data protection laws while not being in the E.U anymore but still within the European Economic Area. The situation is still unclear with regards to Brexit, but I can let you imagine the shirt storm that is coming our way. Funny enough is that the UK has been one key player in the writting and implementation of the GDPR.

 

Who cares, both sites + communities are dead anyway. Forums are old news, discord is all I need.

 

I get the impression that Kev is a hardcore republican. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he donated to the Trump campaign, despite having financial difficulties at the time.

There was one conversation I had with him, a bit of downtime during getting the site up and running, in which he was stanchly defending the state of play of guns in America. In fact, he told me that all Americans need armoured vehicles to protect themselves from the Government. This was under Obama's rule. And that the armoured vehicles need a team of rocket launcher-equipped soldiers to protect them. One minute we were having a "how are you?" conversation, then it escalated into THAT.

It was at that moment that I realized Kev's thought process can be.... extremely unusual.

You know the site has gone to shit when Austin is suggesting we should be more mature!

As for GDPR, a lot of people seem rather clueless as to what it means. It allows EU citizens the right to erasure and the right to object to how their data is used. It also gives people the right to request a copy of all data held on them. Therefore, blocking EU citizens is not a solution - they still have a right to see what data you already hold on them, and to have that data erased. Blocking them from accessing your website will not facilitate that.

Xenforo completely ignored the EU cookie directive. They should have built the popup necessity into the software, really. They chose to poo-poo it as nonsense, basically. However, they are NOT ignoring GDPR. They have added functionality to help you comply. That should speak volumes for how it affects forums.

Yes, why wouldn't I be? Most people, if not everyone, that are American Citizens should be proud of who they are, and being an American is part of who they are.

 

Don't Americans realise that dropping the "proud American" rhetoric is long overdue?
