My gf is going back to china to see her family for the holidays. She has (suprizingly) offered to bring me back anything I want and even explicity stated video games. :p (she usualy rolls her eyes when regarding me and video games)

So anybody have any good things I should maybe have her bring back? I am not going to make her fetch many things. I am tempted to have her try bringing me home a Vii and a JXD 301.

Anything cooler I should have her hunt down?

Where in China is she going? Few times I've been to China I have not found a great deal. Two (yep just two) Famicom clones and some Iques but that's about it.

Go for the Vii. Make absolutely sure you get that jet ski controller too. That thing is made out of awesome and the dreams of young children [insert sweatshop joke here].

Shenyang is a very interesting palaiontological region. I had a flat-mate from Shenyang and he taught me all sorts of funky cooking ;)

Yeah, sometimes my gf tast in food is a little strange. It was actualy nice one time when her mom stayed with us for 2-3 weeks last year. She cooked constantly and most of it was really tasty.

Unless your interested in Chinese language software, or emulators on a CD-R, I doubt you'll find anything of interest. The reason for this is mainly because people always push your standard run of the mill items (like gba multi-carts, etc… Dime a dozen items). You really need to know exactly what you’re looking for, and who to ask. This usually implies that your Chinese is good, as well as your terminology.

For instance, someone I knew was trying to pick up a cartridge for a friend, and the box read in Chinese something like “The golden touch finger” or something along those lines. I had to look at it to tell them that its really just Chinese for “Gold Finger” cheat support. But unless your into video games, you’d never figure stuff like that out.

That is why I am sending her with pictures on what she must return with and i'm also asking here for any specific ideas on things she might come across. :)

As well she was born and raised in shenyang (she is actualy an international student so she has only been in canada for 4 years).

I went to Shanghai with my then girlfriend and we spent a whole day going around shops and if I wanted pirate multi carts, copied cds, mod chips, expensive import games then I was laughing, sadly I didn't and I found one PC like famiclone and two shops (and this was out of about 30!) selling the Ique N64 unit. Did find an interesting shop that had a ton of japense import games and figures but most things were far too expensive or not that rare...

    Cool.

Actualy I am wanting to target chinese devices specificaly and odd toys (hence Vii & JXD 301). Mostly something i'm not really going to find here in NA.

Actualy one time at a chinese mall in toronto (too lazy to google the name) I found a cool toy that was a scaled down gashpon dispencer as well as a scaled down crain game. They were quite cool.

Anybody know if Ique are cheap in china? If so I might have her nab one.

Your talking about Pacific Mall in Toronto. Unless you know Chinese, that place is a total rip-off. I've seen several people get charged premium prices just because they were foreign and didn't know Chinese. Most of the deals, catalogs and order books are in Chinese, so unless you know exactly what your doing, you could easy be quoted a higher price than what others are paying.

As for Shanghai, its a pretty big city so you'll find all your standard CD-Rs and modchip stuff. The Fami-clones mentioned are pretty common. I wouldn't pay too much for those. You'll probably never find a Dr. PC Jr unless you specifly ask. Even then, good luck!

Remember, people in China care about cheap! If you weigh all the decent stuff vs the crap, you'll find a sea of crap before getting anything worthwhile. But at least the sea is so large, the decent stuff still occasionally shows up if you know what to ask for. :) But remember, most of the stuff in China is only artificially rare in North America, just due to geography. In asia, they are dime-a-dozen and are worthless as collectables. Just don't overpay!

Yeah the best thing to get is probably the Vii. And maybe some more modern things like a DS flash cart or something.. you probably won't find older stuff that easy anymore. Even in Hong Kong most of the stuff has disappeared from the streets. Sadly even the piracy countries move on with console generations sooner or later, and even those have lost their touch. Back a few years you could just buy huge amounts of latest movies on VCDs or Playstation/Dreamcast silvers on the Streets of Hong Kong. But even that is no more. Nowadays piracy crackdowns made the progress much more complicated. At first you go to a place where a guy will show you a kind of album and you pick which dvds/games you want. You pay and leave your mobile number. He will hand you out covers and you leave. A few minutes later you will get a phone call with a new address to go to. There you will pick up the actual discs. Its complicated and horrible.

I dunno how it is China mainland nowadays, but I doubt its any better.
