Hmmm, aren't H and V sync detection different in 640x480 and other higher resolutions (I got 1280x768 in my mind)? Like rising/falling edges? IIRC it's something you need to handle for scanline generators.

I think it'd be a good idea to summon people knowledgeable about that kind of electronics, (TriMesh?).

I'm lacking that sort of electronics knowledge -- could be simple as soldering a resistor onto a pin

AND I'm at the "summoning stone" I need one more to summon lvl 90 electronics guru lol

    ^ sorry bad WoW joke

HDMI officially supports pixel clocks above 25 MHz (VGA 480p timing), 480i is typically 13.5 MHz.

If the Dreamcast can start up in 480p, the issue is probably in the timing. It's possible the converter was designed specifically for computer modes, which is dissimilar to SMPTE (TV timing), which the DC almost certainly uses. If the converter were to interpret the signal as literal VGA, buffer overruns could probably be expected as well as sampling distortion from the differing pixel aspects.

    Got the new converter -

    Should I be getting 720x480 / 60i ?

    Thought it would be 640x480 or 720x480 / 60(p)

I have told you that the 25$ mini vga2hdmi found on ebay does the job quite right didn't I?

I'm sure that will end up being a part of my growing "converter box collection" lol

I have the little white AV2HDMI (composhit) adapter already - have to power cycle sometimes but it works

    ---------
Turns out my new toy converts progressive to interlaced - Oh well, only $10
Still looks better than composhit until I get the next converter

For what these new DC VGA boxes cost, you'd think they could incl HDMI - what TV has VGA in 2014?

I'm not sure what this means, but running the first converter thru the new one gets rid of the flickering, jumping image, dark lines, etc. It's still passing the interlaced signal but I found it interesting and wanted to share.

    Dreamcast -> VGA -> Component (720x480i) -> HDMI (1280x720p upscale) -> TV

P.S. I noticed my Mini AV2HDMI drops a few vertical lines. Hopefully the Mini VGA2HDMI doesn't do this too. Anyone know? Does it output native 720x480p or does it chop to 640x480p and upscale to 720p/1080p?

Rather than start a new topic I thought I'd hijack this a little as I was looking at purchasing the same VGA to component converter in the first post. Glad I didn't!

I am trying to get my Dreamcast visuals to 1080p. I am currently using a pure VGA cable connected to my TV which supports a VGA input, the quality is already very good. I actually prefer the cable over the VGA boxes as I find the image quality is slightly better after having compared it against two brands of VGA boxes I own.

To get to 1080p I was thinking of using a VGA to HDMI converter and connecting it to my Onkyo receiver as it has the capability to upscale to 1080p via Marvell's Qdeo chip - it's actually capable of upscaling to 4K. I have already wasted my time on one of those cheap and cheerful VGA to HDMI converters and the image quality was terrible as well as not correctly scaling to 420p (I think it was scaling to 568x480). Also the Onkyo was unable to determine the input resolution so passed it directly through to the TV without any upscaling.

I am currently debating on whether to purchase another VGA to HDMI converter, something more upmarket such as the Atlona Technologies AT-HDVIEW (discontinued but you can still find them around) as was shown in this YouTube video. Another option is to go for another upscaler such as the Etekcity® VGA Audio to HDMI and can be seen in this YouTube video. My third option is to use a VGA to component transcoder such as the Audio Authority 9A60A and let my Onkyo do the upscaling.

Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions before a go blow my money on something please, preferrably if anyone has gone from VGA to component. Is there much image quality lose in doing this? Any help will be greatly appreciated...

    Ted.

Multiple people have already recommended the Framemeister in this thread. As you said, you get what you pay for. However, it doesn't process VGA, so if you're insistent on using VGA as an input, that's no good. Yakumo sells them in the marketplace if you're interested, though. There are some games that don't work with VGA, anyway.

I did consider the Framemeister but with wanting to use VGA only I ruled it out. I have since purchased the AT-HDVIEW so hopefully this will work well. I shall report back when it arrives and let you know what I think, having read other peoples reviews of it it should be all good...

You can use Framemeister with Dreamcast and VGA-box, when using a Kenzei. Beharius sell them in this forum. Other good choice is a Genfen VGA To DVI Scaler Plus and then use a simple DVI to HDMI cable.

It is .. I'm using one.

I have a US, JPN, PAL Dreamcast systems connected to it along with a US & JPN PS2 consoles; I'm using a SCART switch box.

I've never had any issues with this converter - very happy with it. I play most games at 720p and they look great.

This is the model I bought from Amazon: Panlong PAL/ NTSC SCART/ HDMI to HDMI Video Converter Box 720P 1080P Scaler
