So I'm off to London next week for the first time  I'm going to be staying there for five days and now I need something to do while I'm there ^^ So if anyone have any tips on places I have to visit and stuff I have to see, please post. Also I would appreciate tips on game (mostly interested in NES/SNES/DC) and manga/anime stores too (thought I don't know if I will spend to much.. got a Wii to buy ^^). edit: oh, and I will be staying in the middle of the middle of London or something like that from what I've heard.. so anything around there would be best Thanks.
Sweet Thought I'm over to visit my brother who's studying in London, so I don't think we be making any trips in that area. Maybe next time (when I acctualy have some £ to spend)
Where does your brother study, and where will you be staying? I don't know of anywhere particularly good for games, but: Buy a travelcard each day you're in london - Spend one day doing any of the traditional touristy things you want (London Eye, Big Ben, Houses of parliament, buckingham palace etc.) Then spend the others just exploring. If you happen to be in kensington/knightsbridge area (Kensington has the natural history museum, the V&A museum, the Science museum and the royal albert hall, Knightsbridge has harrods, harvey nichols) then let me know and I'll meet up for a drink if I can.
I really recommend the science museum. When I went there, I spent about 7 hours walking around the museum with my mind blown! There was one game shop I went to-- Computer Exchange (CEX?) near the British Museum. Cool from a historical standpoint, but all the retro stuff was way overpriced.
I recomend you the museum where they have the dinosaurs, since when I was there a few years ago, I lived at the opposite side, on the hotel there. And well back then I had the complete copllection of their dinosaurs in plastic. But now my neighbours daughter have them . Since I gave her them as a gift.
That would be the natural history museum - pretty good to have a wander round. Might be worth spending a day doing the natural history and science museum since they're next door. Also the science museum currently has the 'Game On' Exhibition on the history of gaming (http://www.gameonweb.co.uk/)
Anime/manga: Japan Centre on Piccadilly Circus, although any HMV/Virgin will stock a lot of UK anime DVDs these days. Computer games: Lots of arcades/retro shops on Tottenham Court Road. Huge arcade in the Trocadero on Piccadilly Circus as well.
Science Museum and London Dungeon (sounds way too touristic, but it's fun...and expensive iirc) And i would've said Tottenham Court Road, too, but phinn was faster
Give us a shout and we can make it a 3-some ;-) As I work in the City Of London Travel cards are only after 0930 but that should not be to bad All of the museums are free they charge for certain shows they have on You could catch the Game On exhibition http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/exhibitions/gameon/
Forgot to mention that a lot of the museums are now free to go around, although usually charge for exhibitions (Game on is £9 IIRC). Googling around will give many extensive lists EDITretty much all mentioned in VA's post - damn!
wow, that's a lot of places to visit I guess I have to make up a schedule for my visit now thanks everyone. Well.. for now I don't know more specific than what I wrote before "in the middle of the middle of London" going to find it out tomorrow. edit: got it, it's on High Holborn called something like London Covent Garden
Is the japan centre even still there? Either way its tiny and over priced i think. Why has no one mentioned Forbiden Planet? http://www.forbiddenplanet.com/ Great shop in covent garden now. Anyways im up to taking you and Ed if you want on a quick run around central if you guys want.
sorry for the delay.. sure would be nice to meet up.. thought I don't know what the plans going to be once I get there.. so it's just a maybe for now. If I can find some way to post here once in London, we could proably decide something. (damn my linguistic skills.)
Theres quite a lot of internet cafe's, and if you are very desperate (with a laptop), most starbucks' have wifi. Would be good to meet up with some of the forum members
Don't forget the Namco Arcade on the South Bank (right next to the Ferris Wheel thing). It has that awesome 7-player Space Invaders 3D thing Stone
