I'm going to New York in just over a week's time.. and I thought I'd ask those of you that live/have been there some questions! Don't worry - it isn't the usual "where to get rare games" or whatever!! However, on that topic, I'm looking for some fairly common Saturn games that only came out in the US (baseball games etc.). Can anyone recommend any second hand stores that may sell these?

As I'm quite keen on photography, I'm going to be taking lots of pictures! I have a digital SLR, and would like to have a look for cheap lenses etc. (I know they are MUCH cheaper in the US!). Does anyone know any good photographic stores in New York?

I'm also taking my laptop, and want to get some more RAM for it (prices are quite high here at the moment). Where is a good place to go for that?

Oh, and any recommendations for places to eat? I like all sorts of food!

It'd be nice to get some gaming in! Are there any good arcades about? Either modern or retro.

I shall be staying in Manhattan, but will be travelling around a bit - probably visiting Astoria and I'll also spend some time in New Jersey.

Don't know much about used game stores aside from possibly checking out the Chinatown district. But, if you're looking for a good camera store, check out B&H Photo and Adorama. Both are well respected stores with a huge catalog presence, but also great walk-in stores.

If you need the phone numbers or addresses, let me know.

Wow, thanks! I see B&H are in Manhattan.... not too far from where I'm staying! And I see Adorama do rentals and used gear.... hmm, interesting!! Someone recommended me to a similar place called Calumet... but I remember looking at their prices here in the UK and they were fairly steep. Any idea what they're like over there?

Incidentally, how many members live in (or close to) New York?

I used to go regularly years ago and there were some great stores for games....but went a few weeks ago.....searched around before and during and buggar all!

Found what I thought would be a good shop way up on about 102 + 7th I think but was no rarities at all........a few old snes/saturn games.....really disappointed

Someone more local may correct me but I was really disappointed, just a few EB stores

Sorry to put a downer on the games front

RAM etc is slightly lower priced than here...but that old addage, do you buy it a a few more pounds at home to have some sort of come bak on it

Yeah, not too bothered about games - although would be nice to pick up cheapies - ya know, the sort you'd get in Cash Converters here!! I'm looking for those that aren't out over here - sure, I don't expect to find the high value titles, but the cheapy baseball games etc. would be good! Sounds like your shop might not be bad - any ideas what it was called?

RAM.. well, I can get it trade, and that's about £40 for a 512mb stick of no-name SODIMM. Over there, it is like $50 for a major brand... one which will be fairly easy to return over here, too. That's £15 (or more) off.. which is a fairly substantial saving to me!

Incidentally, the lens I'm after - £799 over here, £765 if you shop around. Over there, $920 or $820 for a grey import. With Nikon, they ONLY honour warranties in the country of origin - hence the discount on the Asian imports. However, I'm already buying "grey import" with the US version, so here lie some huge savings. Or, I could pay $459 for a second hand one without the (somewhat annoying for this size lens) bracket. What you say is true - sometimes it pays to buy on your doorstep... but when the saving is £300, would you still get it at home?

The St. Marks Place store was "Multimedia 1.0".
Had a reputation for been very expensive and having staff with unhelpful "attitude".

Its since moved and has been renamed "Videogamesnewyork".

I think there was a recent thread on the DP Forums that mentioned the new store was bigger and had more "realistic" prices.

(Note; I've never been to New York, have no affilation with the store!)

I know Multimedia1.0, wondered where they went to as bought a whole load of Virtual Boy games from them years and years ago when I first got hold of a machine...they were really cheap $7-9 a go and shipping wasn`t to bad and all arrived quicky and safely

So my dealings were good...but only 1 short simple transaction

Multimedia 1.0 has closed up shop. The spot on St.Mark's is like a lingerie / headshop now.

St.Marks of course still worth a visit, if not for the Automat.

The only game in town is really J & L Game Trading, on the corner of Canal and Elizabeth St. Prices are all over the place (although they tend to be high, as everything is in NYC) but for domestic games you should be content.

Chinatown Fair, the arcade, is not far from there either.

Of course you gotta visit the Nintendo World Store at Rockefeller Plaza. You'll won't find more than some state-of-the-art games, DS, GC and so on, but its worth a visit I think. There's also a corner with various rarities like a NES prototype (keyboard & floppy reader), almost every GBA SP Limited Edition and more.

If you're interested in DVDs, I can recommend a store whose name I forgot. But its located at Lexington Ave. on the leftern side of the road (closer to new jersey) between 50th and 60th street. It has an awful lot of walls (!) filled with DVDs, DVD-boxes and LEs, another whole wall of PS2/GC/XB/DS/PSP Games and the second story is a paradise for every CD collector.
It's fairly difficult to spot, you'll see only a neon sign like "DVD - CD" or something.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I'll definately be checking out Nintendo World - my friend works very close to it so I'll be in the area :)
