Hello all, Some of you will have seen my post in the 'what's it worth' section regarding this amazing piece of history. I thought I'd post it here to see if anyone has any information available about this Wii, other than what's already available on the internet. A little history from myself is I bought this from a very reliable source of mine after the closure of THQ, I was informed this was built as a publicity stunt to get 'Big Family Games' into the public eye and make everyone believe they could play it, especially if the Queen & family were playing it. I was told the Wii was never delivered as no one signed for it, I have also found a website or two that suggested the same. I have had this at a jewelers who inspected it and from my understanding he believes it's likely gold and real, however he wouldn't acid test it on plastic. He inspected it very carefully with an eye glass and said there is another coating under the gold, though they would need to do this to gold plate as gold plating doesn't work on bare plastic. I have googled long and hard and can't find another gold Wii that matches it's appearence other than the one THQ had made. At this stage I do truly believe this story to be true. Any information anyone has that they can share would be much appreciated and if you have an idea on value, please do post in the what's it worth section for me, thanks. Pictures: Thanks for looking and any information or knowledge on this console would be much appreciated. Oh and for anyone interested, here's a few interesting links: http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/exclusive-pics-of-the-queen-s-royal-wii-601485 http://kotaku.com/5264383/the-queen-of-englands-gold-plated-wii http://www.techdigest.tv/2009/05/the_royal_wii_.html
Just a heads up.... https://assemblergames.com/threads/please-refrain-from-using-photobucket.66034/ This is going to become a big problem... so I recommend finding new hosting sooner rather than later.
Isn't that a bit of a strange story? I mean, they go through the effort of gold plating the console, send it to them (the royal family) nobody signs for it, it's returned and then they just forget about it until it's time clear out the office? I'm finding it a bit of a stretch... not saying you weren't told that - but some sort of documented provenance might help - did it come with any paperwork from the studio? I remember there were fake gold plated carts knocking about many years ago... some guy in Thailand, iirc.
Sorry all for the delay in replying, arnold, it was a marketing tactic, it kind of worked, kind of failed. It wasn't meant to be a show piece as much as it was to get the word out there for the game and the company, as far as THQ was likely concerned, the budget for marketing was partially spent on this, it did it's job, it wasn't anything more special to them than that most likely, purely a piece of marketing. I attempted to contact someone who would know definitive answers, but they weren't helpful and decline to comment. There is no documentation for this, THQ didn't sell it or let it leave their premises for any other reason than they went bankrupt and lets just say it ended up 'out there' My source is very reliable and as far as I'm concerned very trustworthy, this isn't the only piece I have had from them, I had a fair bit of THQ stuff. Anyway, I've not owned this for quite a while now, the new owner has further verified it's authenticity. Oh and not only was I told it was never delivered, if you have a read of some websites they indicate the same so it adds up pretty nicely. I know plenty of people online always think everything is fake, a bit like when I came up with JFG for Gameboy Advance, that kicked up a bit of a stir too. In reality if people think it's fake or real, I really don't care, it makes no difference to me either way - just thought I'd make that pretty clear in case the same band wagon show up from the JFG thread at some point.
